Pretty happy with it. Could use some work tho.

Ok, where to begin. This item is described as a blu-ray player with wi-fi. Those two items seem to work very well. Set up was easy. Found my Linksys router and configured it by clicking on the wi-fi protected setup button on my router after the tv told me to. You can do it manually by adding the router pass phrase but this was so much simpler. After going through the setup and finishing it, it told me an update was available, so I clicked on update and it started and showed a progress line and said don't shut off power. Progress bar seem to be going really slow so I left the room and when I came back tv and blu-ray player were off. Don't know if that's normal for an update and was a little concerned but when I turned it back on every thing seemed to be fine and it said I had the latest update.First thing I did is to play a blu-ray disc, since this is the main reason of this purchase. Would have to give this function 5 stars. Plays flawlessly. Great picture. I choose the option during setup to always leave the machine in standby mode to start playback faster.The second reason I purchased this player was for the ability to stream Amazon prime movies. Setup was simple and straightforward. Player gives you a code to register the device on the computer at Amazon's site. Have watched 4 or 5 movies now and they run perfectly even though the network settings in the option menu says I'm only getting a 20 to 40% connection rate. That had me a bit worried because I didn't want to see a lot of buffering while trying to watch a streaming video from Amazon. It doesn't appear to be a problem but if it becomes one I'm sending this back because my router's signal is more than powerful to reach the player. I can set my laptop and kindle right next to the player and get a signal from the router with full bars. Hopefully this will not become an issue.As of now the only pay service I have is Amazon Prime so I didn't try any of the other services like Hulu. I would hope and assume they would be as easy to set up as amazon was. I did use the YouTube app and was able to view videos just fine. Navigation is a bit rough because of the onscreen text input program you have to use to input url's or search requests. I'm not planning on using this app much so wasn't to annoyed. I also tried the Web Browser app and the Facebook app. If this is a big selling point for you I think you are going to be disappointed. Pages seem to take a long time to load. Navigation within the pages by using the remote is really time consuming. Trying to input any text on a page, like a search query or a password will likely drive you mad over time. Someone mentioned something about adding a wireless keyboard in another review but I don't know if they had success with that. Others have mentioned you can control it with an app on your iphone or android phone and then use the keyboard on your phone to type in text. If I was going to use the web function on this player much, I would definitely look into that, but I'm not.Another selling point of this player that swayed me into purchasing it was the ability to use a DLNA server to see and play music and video files from your computer. The easiest way to do this if you are using a Windows computer is by using Windows Media Player which comes bundled with most windows computers. I think version 11 and 12 both have the ability to act as a DLNA server. I won't go into how to set it up, but it's very easy. You can google "How do I set up WMP to be a DLNA server" and you find all you need. If you set it up correctly you'll see a new icon under the Video and Music settings on the onscreen list of the blu-ray menu. Found and played my music. Most are in mp3 format. All seemed to play fine. Now playing my videos off the computer had issues. I can see all my videos but getting them all to play is a work in progress. All my vids are in .avi format. It can see all of them, but the player will only play some of them and I can't figure out why it will play some and not others. I can play everyone of my avi movies in Windows Media Player on my computer but once I stream it to the Blu-ray player some will get a message saying "can not play file. may not be a supported file type or may be corrupt" So this is obviously an issue with the player. I chose avi's to convert my videos to because it gives decent quality and can be seen and recognized by almost every player I've ever used. So I'm a bit disappointed with this feature. My LG HDTV has a usb port that has played every avi file that I've plugged in and more. So I can still play movies this way but I was hoping to get them all in one place and save transferring back and forth to a usb stick. I'll keep playing with this and if I find an answer I'll post it here.Ok, to sum up I'd say this is a very good purchase. The price point is excellent, especially if what you want is a blu-ray player with wireless capability to stream pay per movie and tv services. Really that alone should get 5 stars. At this price that would be more than fair. But,,, what I think they did was try to make this a swiss army knife of blu-ray players and add every darn capability from every player on the market. Unfortunately most of the capabilities it adds on are frustrating to use, to be kind. That being said, would I recommend this to a friend, YES. If they wanted the main functions, but not if they wanted a web browser and dlna capable device that could handle multiple video formats.Update 6-5-12 Found what file types that the sony supplies native support for through DLNA. For picutes it's JPEG , for music it support file types, MP3 & LPCM and for video it support MPEG-2 PS & MPEG-2 TS. I'll provide the link below and also their instruction on how to set up the DLNA server.Update 9-16-12 Just thought I'd give a 3 month update. Still very happy with the player. All disks I have triedhave worked in the player, including non retail ones. Have also subscribed to Hulu and set up was as easy asthe Amazon Prime set-up. Still highly recommend this blu ray player.Update 12-14-12 Thought I'd give a 6 month update because I know I always appreciate people that update their reviews as opposed to the folks that review an item the day they get it and say it's the worst thing they ever saw or it's the best thing since sliced bread, and then you never hear from them again.Still super happy with this purchase. It's nice to get an electronic item that works like it should and doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out how to set it up. Should really give this 5 stars but I guess I'm a tough reviewer. One of the only things that's stopping me is the dlna aspect of the player, only being able to support a select few movie formats that can be streamed from your computer. Mainly mpeg is supported. I can play other movie formats occasionally, but it's hit and miss.The player has updated twice over the internet since I got it. I don't know what the updates did specifically but I do know I have more apps now than I did initially. I saw Crackle on it the other day and didn't know much about it, but I tried it out and watched a movie for free with no sign ups. They insert an add in the movie about every 10 minutes or so. Not very bothersome or annoying. I'm sure they don't have the library of a Netflix but a nice way to see a movie that's been out a while. I'll use that app again I'm sure. Starting to wonder why I still need Dish!Blu-ray disks and regular dvd's play as well today as when I got it. Have never lost my internet connection either, like some other blu-ray players on Amazon that I read the reviews about.I still say get it, don't think you'll find anything better for the price out there. Happy Holidays!Update 12-28-12 This is important information regarding the DLNA aspect of this player. Leonardo left a comment letting us know that Sony does have it's own DLNA server software called Homestream. I installed it and all my media is now playing on the blu-ray player. If you have avi's, mp4's, mkv's, vobs that you haven't been able to play, this should work. Google 'Sony Homestream' to find the software. Thanks again Leaonardo for that information!

Works great for connecting to Netflix & Amazon Prime !

I purchased this DVD player for it's wireless connectivity to my home network. It works great connecting to both Netflix and Amazon Prime. Setup is very easy; was up and running in just a few minutes. I did play both a regular and a Blu-Ray DVD to see if the machine was working correctly. They both played fine; Blu-Ray playback was super. If I were to note one problem with this player it would be start-up time. I also own a Panasonic Blu-Ray player which begins playing DVDs quite a bit quicker than this Sony. All things considered, this model is a good choice. Another plus is its size ...very compact! If this is an important consideration, it will be a great buy!

An excellent, simple Blu-Ray player

I needed a secondary Blu-Ray player for the bedroom (my primary being a PlayStation 3 160GB System). I saw this and being a fan of Sony products, due to their reliability and ease of use, I thought that it would fit the bill. I will say that it has a small footprint and does it's main purpose well (playing Blu-Rays). I have seen Stargate (15th Anniversary Edition) [Blu-ray], Terminator 2: Judgment Day (Skynet Edition) [Blu-ray], and The Borgias: The First Season [Blu-ray] so far on the player and they all look great. [A note: the player is hooked up to a 4 year old 37" Magnavox 720p LCD].Aside from it playing Blu-Ray discs I use the player to view movies and TV shows from Amazon Instant streaming services which again, it does admirably (and access to the Amazon streaming library was one of my main reasons for this purchase). Since this was to be placed in my bedroom where I do not have the router I needed it to be wireless and as of yet have experienced no cutoffs in the connection.Also, the selection of applications to use are excellent. I have made great use of the National Public Radio, Slacker, and Pandora apps. The Moshcam (to view recorded concerts of different music genres) was an unexpected and welcome surprise. I will note though that to access these applications one must create an account with Sony and activate them via an account linker on their "Sony Essentials" site which admittedly was a pain, but not too intrusive.I take away a half star for the following: The boot time and switching from the various applications in the menu does lag at times and this may be due to the processor and/or memory available (though I am not sure); the boot time can be improved through an option that is analogous to "sleep" mode on a computer. Another important note is that some Blu-Rays have special features that require memory and it appears that this Player does not have onboard memory. Therefore, should you want to access special features you may have to connect a USB flashdrive in order to do so.Overall, if you want a simple Blu-ray player that has a small footprint and is not complicated to use and has wi-fi capabilities I highly recommend the Sony BDP-S390 Blu-ray Disc Player with Wi-Fi (Black).

Outstanding Bang for the Buck, Future Proof (7.1 & 3D), iPhone App is Great, Buy an Airport Express Too

I tend to do a lot of research before making large purchasing decisions and so far this receiver is receiving a pretty rosy reception! Its predecessor, the 1019, was CNET's and Gizmodo's top mid-range receiver. Both reviewers had just as high hopes for the 1020, and Gizmodo already called it the best receiver $550 can buy, saying the 1020 "hit the sweet spot" that gave the most bang for buyer's buck.The critics I read all raved about the excellent sound quality, but the 1020 brings some new offerings to the table for a mid-range receiver.In short, the most valuable features you get with this model that you don't get with the next step down are:1. A fifth HDMI port in back, an extra sixth in front (for digital cameras, computers, etc.).2. Analog video upscaling (which I don't care too much about since most of my content is HD already or played through an upscaling player).3. The iContolAV iPhone app. Very cool for controlling volume and switching inputs. Works simply by having your receiver connected to ethernet and your iPhone connected to the network via WiFi. A few times the app has had trouble properly connecting, but it usually works well.4. Internet radio with programmable stations, which is cool, though you can't currently control the station selections from the iPhone App, unfortunately.5. A color configuration interface output to your TV via the HDMI output. I can't imagine trying to configure all my speakers without seeing a graphical representation of their location on screen.That last feature feature, the HDMI 1.4 ports that support 3D, the 7.1 surround capabilities, excellent sound quality and the iPhone App are what made the VSX-1020 the clear choice for me. I also appreciated the automatic calibration with the included microphone and the included iPod cable/compatibility, but those weren't as strong of selling points.The only negatives of note for me is that the little front port cover is a little cheap. It's not even a door, simply a little plastic piece that pops out if you push one side. I, like others, have also experienced the issue where the receiver switches to TV/Sat when first turned on, but I've yet to determine whether that's a problem with the receiver itself or my Harmony universal remote (I'll update the review as I get more information).One last tip to buyers, however. If you're considering listening to your phone's music over Bluetooth by buying the $99 AS-BT100 adapter, I'd consider buying a $99 Apple Airport Express instead (assuming your music is managed through iTunes). It lets you stream music from your computer to the receiver over WiFi and control what's playing via iTunes or Apple's robust "Remote" iPhone app, but more importantly the Airport Express acts as a USB print server and a one port wireless bridge (something that lets you connect wired devices to a wireless network).That wireless bridge capability is especially valuable, since you'll need it or something similar for internet radio and iControlAV iPhone app support if your VSX-1020 receiver isn't close to your wireless router (mine isn't). Buying the Airport Express kills two birds with one stone.UPDATE:A few ideas have been thrown out by other Amazon posters to help alleviate the issue with the receiver switching to TV/Sat when it first turns on. The first idea is to change the receiver's settings thusly:"1 Press Receiver , then press Home Menu.2 Select `System Setup', then press ENTER.3 Select `Other Setup', then press ENTER.4 Select `HDMI Setup', then press ENTER.5. Set Control to 'Off'."The second idea is to adjust your TV settings like so."Go into Menu under HDMI-CEC and turn it Off. If the set is a Samsung look for AnyNet+ (default is normally On) and turn it Off."I'm still having issues going directly to a given HDMI input when the unit first power on (going to "HDMI Input 1" simply toggles the current HDMI input instead of going directly to the one you want), but I've made the quirk tolerable by programming one of the buttons on my universal remote to toggle inputs, so it's easy to fix.

Packed with features but does have some flaws

This thing is loaded with features. My favorite by far is playing internet radio directly from an internet connection. It has an easy way to program and rename stations from an http site. It has a nice glossy front and runs really cool especially compared to my old Onkyo oven. The iphone control is pretty cool although it would be nice if you could turn on the receiver from the iphone app. It plays an ipod well and does display cover art for music although very small. It's pretty cool that you can use a standard USB cable to connect an ipod as well as some other USB devices (Haven't played with that). I do wish the USB input was on the back. I have an ipod dock that i want to leave plugged in and it looks pretty bad plugged into the front.This thing switches inputs relatively quickly and can scroll through audio settings without long interruptions in sound. Powering up on the other hand is extremely sluggish. I timed 40 seconds from power up to get picture and sound rolling. I really like that you can customize the input names although the method of scrolling through each letter takes a while. It's also nice to be able to hide some inputs so that you don't have to scroll through a bunch of inputs that are never used when scanning through.The remote is setup like a universal remote. You have to select a specific mode for most inputs. Say you're in ipod mode, you have to go back into receiver mode to use many of the settings buttons. This makes it very difficult to program a universal remote to control the receiver. you have to have a different set of arrow commands programmed for each input. Also, for programming a universal remote. All inputs have a separate button that you can program except of course HDMI inputs which are the ones I use. To select one of the 5 HDMI inputs you can continually press the HDMI button to get the one you want which is not a good method when you just want to hit one button to get to the correct input. There is a backwards way to reassign the analog input selection to use an HDMI input then rename it, but it takes some work. It is impressive that the included remote can be programmed for other devices and can even learn commands and perform simple macros.The display on the unit I received has a small thread of some sort hanging down inside the display. This is probably just rare defect but it is annoying when looking at the display.HDCP ERRORI see this message flash multiple times on the display every time I power on. This is some kind of copyright nonsense built into HDMI cables. Although all HDMI inputs on my TV are HDCP compliant and I have used the same HDMI cables on a previous receiver without issues I had all kinds of problems getting my receiver to work at all because of this error. Time and time again I would be watching TV and then without touching anything I would see this error, then no inputs would work and it would take a while for anything to come back up. After playing with lots of setting and trying multiple cables and inputs on my TV now I just get the error without losing picture and sound. The manual says this: "Some components that are compatible with HDCP still cause this message to be displayed, but so long as there is no problem with displaying video, this is not a malfunction." Ummm, sorry Pioneer but when an error is displayed incorrectly that is called a bug and IS a problem. I'm sure they are being forced by law to incorporate this HDCP stuff in their unit but they are doing a very poor job.Zone 2Buying this receiver I had a plan to wire an adjacent room as a zone 2 so that I could play music in that other room. Unfortunately the zone 2 feature on this unit does not work with any digital inputs. Because I have everything connected via HDMI this makes zone 2 a worthless feature to me. As an alternative I decided to hook up the other room to the Speaker B connection. This won't allow me to listen to two different inputs simultaneously as zone 2 does, but at-least I can listed to digital inputs in the other room when I want. The problem is for some reason the speaker selection cannot be controlled with the remote. So I have to walk to the receiver to select to use Speaker B and then walk back to turn it off That may not sound like much, but part of my plan was to use an RF remote to control the music in the other room while in the other room. There is just no way to really get this unit to perform in such a scenario.

Very good performance and versatility with a few shortcomings

I picked up a 1020 over the weekend. I have been building custom cabinetry and needed a slimmer (and cooler) receiver for our secondary viewing room and the 1020 seemed to fit the bill in large part based upon a pleasant experience with the 919/1019 and the elite 21.For reference, the 1020 is replacing an Onkyo 1007, which I really enjoyed, but was a bit big for the cabinet and largely unused with a baby's bedroom nearly adjacent to the area. Keep in mind, the Onkyo weighs 52 lbs and draws nearly 11 amps - not a fair fight between the two.In comparison to the 1019/919 (which powers my second and third zones), the 1020 looks very similar, but Pioneer removed the blue led power button (they did the same with the bdp-320 from the 51fd last year as well). The front panel buttons have been reconfigured slightly, but overall the two look very similar.I have the 1020 configured as 5.1 plus wides. The speaker setup was pretty easy, but it appears that setting it up as normal plus wides would prevent you from operating Zone 2 despite the manual saying the contrary.In terms of audio quality, the receiver sounds very good and similar to the 1019/919. That said, when turned louder (say -5db), it appears to lose its legs a bit sooner than the 1019. I heard a bit more distortion in playing music loudly (i was alternating the same speakers and source via speaker switch before I had the two connected). That said, I would think most folks would not be able to tell a difference at normal volume levels, but the power draw cut from last year does seem to manifest itself at loud levels in my amateurish testing. Please do not try to pull every thread in my comparison - just an average guy comparing the two side by side.Running MCACC was as simple as other pioneer models, but the system did seem to be a bit too generous as to the speaker size of the speakers in my setup (audyssey classified them as small and set the individual speaker crossovers at 100hz). I have been using the wide listening mode and have found it reasonably effective in providing a broader sound array for the wide room. I will need more critical listening time to compare it to Audyssey DSX's wide presence processing mode. Overall, I am pleased with the sound quality of the 1020, but it could benefit by a bit more power. I would caution about tying to drive large or inefficient speakers with this receiver if your listening preferences are very loud.The remote is an improvement in that it is learning, but a step back in dark room navigation. Yes the keys glow in the dark, but labels are small and difficult to quickly identify. It is miles ahead of Denon's odd remotes, but lacks some of the simple and easy to identify buttons of Onkyo.The receiver has run cooly, which is an improvement from the space-heater my Onkyo could be.The receiver does offer a really good listening experience for a very light (and presumably efficient) unit. That said, I do lament a few things: onscreen osd - at least volume/source/audio codec; a slightly ergonomic remote; and assignable speakers to let you customize presence and zone 2.Overall, I am happy with the unit and pleasantly surprise how cooly it runs.

This Sandisk 'class-4' micro-SDHC card is faster than a PNY 'class-10'

I purchased a SanDisk 32 GB microSDHC Flash Memory Card SDSDQM-032G nearly two months ago, for use in my VIZIO 8-Inch Tablet VTAB1008. At the same time, I also purchased a higher-priced PNY 32 GB microSDHC Card (P-SDU32G10-EFS2) which is supposed to be a 'class-10'. My benchmark results, however, show that the Sandisk class-4 card is actually faster - most of the time.I used two sets of benchmark programs. One is called 'Flash Memory Toolkit v2.0', which measures the random read/write speed of files between 1MB and 15MB. The other one is called 'H2testw v1.4', which measures the sequential read/write speed using 1GB files. Here are my results: (see my uploaded charts in 'Customer Images' section for details)- For smaller files (1-5MB), the Sandisk class-4 card gives an amazing write speed of 15-17MB/s, while the PNY 'class-10' card can only get 1-6MB/s- For larger files (10-15MB), the Sandisk and PNY cards are about equal at around 8MB/s for write- For huge files (1GB), the PNY did better at 9.5MB/S, while the Sandisk dropped to 5.5MB/s- The read speeds of both cards are equally high at around 18MB/S (this number may be limited by the maximum speed of my card reader used)What the above shows is that: When used in a typical digital camera (with file size 3-5MB), this Sandisk 'class-4' card is at least twice as fast as the PNY so-called 'class-10' card. But when used in a HD video camera (sequential writing of huge file), then the PNY card should perform better.For a card to be marketed as a 'class-10', it must maintain a MINIMUM write speed of 10MB/s. So by this definition, the PNY card does not qualify since it cannot even achieve a MAXIMUM write speed of 10MB/s. This Sandisk card, on the other hand, exceeds the requirement of 'class-4' by a huge margin.Sandisk seems to be the only flash memeory manufacturer that still gives honest, conservative speed class ratings. Any other manufacturers would have labeled this card a 'class-6' or even higher. As a matter of principle, I rather give my money to a company that promises less but delivers more, instead of to others that do the opposite. At the present cost of about 1 buck per GB, this is an unbeatable deal![Aside]The capacity of this card, as reported by my computer, is only 29.7GB. Note that this is actually normal, because compter people define one 'Giga' as '2 to the power 30', which is 7.4% greater than 1 billion. So 29.7GB comes to just about 32 billion bytes, which is '32GB' according to marketing people.[Update Dec 3, 2011]I re-tested the two cards above, using the CrystalDiskMark v3.01. The results are consistent with my previous finding. See my newly uploaded charts in 'Customer Images' for details.

Great price on a genuine product

This is a great price for a 32GB SanDisk micro sdhc card. Don't let the 10 people who gave this a 1 star rating scare you, this is a great price for a good product. Anyone who works with computers or technology in general knows that you will occassionally have a device that just fails. I work a computer helpdesk and see it with hard drives all the time, it happens. That's why any good manufacturer warrants their product, so if you have a failure like this, you get a new one. These types of failures are unavoidable.This is a geniun SanDisk product, sold by Amazon.com and not some third party seller. Buy with confidence.

A deal, but, if given the option CHOOSE (RETAIL PACKAGING) OR YOU WILL RECIEVE A COUNTERFEIT ITEM. No joke.

However, I WAS NOT AWARE THAT AMAZON INTENDS FOR THIS TO HAPPEN THE MAJORITY OF THE TIME BECAUSE THEY ARE ACTUALLY SELLING YOU A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT PRODUCT THAT IS MUCH, MUCH CHEAPER FOR THEM TO MAKE. Although, I assume that's part of how Amazon offers low prices.The amazon page for this item secretly contains 2 items:SDSDQ-032G-AFFP (Default item. Counterfeit. Poor chances of receiving a card that's not a knock-off/counterfeit/lesser-quality item, OR an item that was previously returned/refurbished/slightly-damaged-but-good-enough-for-hassle-free-packaging.)SDSDQM-032G-B35 (Retail item. Legitimate. Excellent chances of receiving a new, legitimate SD card.)Amazon (immorally) tries to get as many people to buy the non-retail one as possible. Do not buy SanDisk cards that have 'Bulk' attached to the name, or 'Frustration-Free', or anything else other than "Retail"!Also, here's a short guide for repartitioning/reformatting with GParted, if you were unlucky enough to get a lesser-quality card, or are having issues with one (I'm sure there's Windows software too, just Google it):Short version:1. Insert your SD card into a microSDHC USB adapter (commonly comes with SD cards, also on Amazon for a few bucks).2. Plug the adapter into your computer and make sure the SD card is recognized.3. Download and Run: GParted. (Free, comes with Partition Magic, you may need to boot into it).4. Select the drive in GParted, and click "create new partition table" in MSDOS (erases drive).5. Re-partition the drive in whatever filesystem your device requires (look it up, usually FAT32).6. The size of the partition can be your entire card, except the first 500MB. Make sure that you leave about 500MB of unallocated/free space BEFORE the rest of the partition. You'll end up with a 28.5GB card instead of a 29GB card, but your speeds, stability, and compatibility GREATLY increases. Note: This is also true with many other flash drives and external storage.

Incredible Value, but HDMI Video Issues mar an otherwise perfect Entry-Level Receiver

Unlike a lot of CEs, Onkyo may have indavertantly cannibalized its own model lineup by pushing so much featureset into an entry level receiver that it might deter buyers from their higher end models. I recently did a thorough comparison of the Pioneer VSX-1020 and Denon AVR-791 and the Onkyo nudged out the Pioneer due to its beefier amp section and OSD capabilities. That said, I must caution users that its value is marred by what appears to be a bug with its ability to pass through HDMI video signals unmolested, even in "Through" modes. This bug manifests itself in two ways: 1. 24 bit sources (like cable hdtv) are upconverted to 30 bit when output on a display; AND 2. for some inexplicable reason, 1080p 24fps sources stutter intermittently as if a frame is dropped. The latter might be more noticeable to plasma owners whereas 120hz and 240hz LCDs might compensate for the frame stuttering with their interpolation software (ie the soap opera effect).With that caveat, the Onkyo is a terrific performer offering strong power (power consumption is up from the 607 to a very grown up 756 watts), terrific flexibility (four speaker terminals can be assigned to wide, height or zone 2). The Denon is limited to merely 7 speaker terminals and the Pioneer has only a pair of assignable terminals. The Audyssey auto-callibration (2EQ) is a notch behind Denon, but the inclusion of Audyssey DSX (for wide arrangements) is a feature that the Denon does not offer. While it lacks the USB terminal for Ipod playback of the Pioneer and the Denon, it does offer a computer input which might resolve the HDMI handshake nightmare many face with htpcs.Onkyo rather smartly included a fan atop of the receiver, which is silent and all but eliminates the historical Onkyo toaster oven effect.I really enjoy this receiver, but found the HDMI video molestation issues to quite problematic and what mar an otherwise incredible buy. Hopefully Onkyo can issue a firmware update.

Love my new Onkyo 608

As others have said, the two 1 star reviews do not review this new Onkyo 608 (makes no sense to me).Anyway, I absolutely love my new Onkyo 608. I never review stuff, but I wanted to give props to this receiver. I was debating between this one and the new Pioneer 1020. However, I've heard that the amps in the Pioneers don't compare to the amps in the Onkyos. Though I cannot verify the truth of this, I do believe that the amp in the Onkyo is of a very high quality. I have already noticed a tremendous amount of power increase over my previous Yamaha receiver (the model that was included with the Yamaha 390 HTIB). This puts out a lot more sound, and I absolutely love the ability to take advantage of HD audio. I noticed a huge fidelity difference in the compressed Dolby Digital track for Dark Knight and the Dolby True HD. The track was intended to include a lot of bass, and the HD includes all of it. The regular Dolby did not compare. Thus, HD audio is definitely worth having if you own a blu-ray player. Just like video quality (some transfers are better than others; aka reference quality), not all sound tracks will have a huge difference, but to me, it's still worth it. Back to the Onkyo: I love it. There are so many settings that you can tweak. If you like the ability to configure your equipment, you will love this receiver! You can also bi-amp with this receiver, which is nice if you don't have 7 speakers.

First and foremost, people that don't even own the "608" shouldn't even be posting here. Trying to compare the "608" that has a built in fan and the "606" that doesn't AND has the fact the "608" has 2x the amount of features is like apple and oranges. Enough said about that and onto a review by a person that actually owns the "608".... Pushes my polk audio speakers very very well (2 @ 70 monitors, 4 @ 50 monitors, 1 @ cs2 center, and powered psw505). Volume hardly goes past 1/2 way / 50,,, anymore and the neighbors start calling cops im sure.. Loads of options and can be tweeked untill you are blue in the face. Got sub set @ 80hz, front main 70's set @ 60hz, all 4 surround 50 speakers set @ 80hx THX, and cs2 center set @ 80hz THX. One really really nice thing about the onkyo 608 is how cool it is and stays @ room temp with the built in fan. I'm loving this receiver so far and would highly advise anyone to purchase without a 2nd thought. More receiver than I need with no need for seperate amp.

Does the job well/tip for Comcast users

Out of nowhere, I was having excruciatingly slow internet speed on Comcast. The Comcast tech advised that my Motorola SB 4100 was at the "end of life" and that I should upgrade. Skeptical, I purchased this modem which is a DOCSIS 3.0 (and backwards compatible) modem. It worked. I went from a 2mbps download speed to over 17mbps. What a difference. There was one installation glitch that you need to be aware of. When you hook up the modem (connect the coax cable, connect the ethernet cable, and plug it in, that's it), and then try to get online, it will direct you to a Comcast self-activation screen (no other site is available). After entering my account number and phone number and hitting the "next" button, I got a blank screen, and nothing happens. So I called Comcast and they said that usually happens if you are doing an upgrade; it mostly works only for a new service connection. However, it is a simple matter to give the tech your MAC address and the serial number. After about 5 minutes, while he stayed on the line, it came alive, no problem. BUT, here's the thing: the serial number they need is the CUSTOMER serial number. This is only found on the bottom of the Motorola box the modem came in. This is different from the "S/N" serial number that is on the label that is on the instruction sheet and on the bottom of the modem itself. The customer S/N has letters in it; the regular S/N has only numbers in it and is too long. My first Comcast tech didn't know that and it took a day to sort it out. Other than that, it works well with my iMac and Apple Airport Extreme Base wireless router. Enjoy

Stay with the SB6120

I have tried both the SB6120 and the SB6121 and the signal levels and speeds were the same on both.The SB6121 is a little smaller than the SB6120 but runs much warmer than the SB6120. Looks like they tried to cram too much hardware into too small of a space.My SB6121 did not come with the power save button (it's listed as an optional feature), so about the only difference between the two models is the design. Both the SB6120 and the SB6121 use the same firmware: labeled SB612X.So unless you want the different looking LED lights and a smaller and warmer box for a higher price, stay with the SB6120.As far as speeds are concerned: the multiple channel bonding on these DOCSIS 3.0 modems is nice for sustained constant speeds. It also makes it easier for your ISP to enforce the speed cap if they choose to do so (Comcast in my case does). I was getting 20+ Mbps down and 3+ Mbps up on my old Linksys DOCSIS 2.0 modem, however that was the peak when the transfer first started, then it would taper off.The DOCSIS 3.0 modem stays right at the 12/2 ceiling of my speed tier, but at least the speeds stay right up there and do not drop off after a few seconds.

Modem NOT defective - Comcast conspiracy?

I felt compelled to write this to help those who will encounter the problems I faced (and mentioned here). I'm one of the many people who wanted to avoid renting a modem from Comcast and bought this modem based on the stellar reviews, only to find that on the day of installation/activation that it "didn't work". Didn't work meant experiencing the same symptoms that's been mentioned here several times - "modem connects but then resets/power cycles/disconnects itself within a few minutes." This happened to me on the day I activated my Comcast internet. The technician spent 1.5 hours trying to figure it out and ended up loaning me a Comcast modem (Motorola SB5120 DOCSIS2), which came up almost instantly and activated just as fast (go figure). He suggested I return this modem as it was defective, in his opinion. I didn't like this since the probability of this was very small. But I saw what I saw and could not get past the first page of Comcast self activation screen with this modem. Before the web page for self activation could proceed, after typing my account info and phone number, the modem would conveniently lose connection. At one point I did get to the next screen where it was scanning for devices, but the modem cut out thereby hanging the process. The modem was packed up in the box for return to Amazon when I couldn't shake how much this bothered me and by my bad luck. So I came back here and read pretty much every review. What I found was there's several people who experienced the EXACT same symptoms while trying several of the same modem. There were two reviews that stood out. One was from a person who mentioned the Comcast technician moaned when he saw it was this modem, indicating that the technician was aware of difficulties using this modem. The person mentioned that after 70 minutes of trying to get the modem to connect the technician advised him to leave the modem powered on and hooked up for awhile and to try activating later. The person did this and was successful in activating the modem. The other review was from a person who was admirably persistent. His review talks of several attempts to connect and refusal to accept that the modem was defective. He ended up leaving the modem power on and connected overnight so the modem could "download firmware". The next day he was able to activate after two attempts with Comcast self activation process. Lastly, I noticed for me that if I left the modem power on and connected but make no attempt to activate it via Comcast web site, the modem retains connection (via indicator lights) for prolonged periods of time. It only seems to lose connection when I try to activate. Based on this I felt something was broken with Comcast activation process specifically for this modem or perhaps Comcast was intentionally making it difficult to activate this modem to convince customers to rent a "reliable" modem from them. To be honest, it almost worked for me. After sitting there watching the technician agonize trying to get the modem to work, I was tempted to rent the modem and move on with life. So as one last hail Mary attempt, this is what I did:1. Took the modem back out of the box and left the Motorola SB6121 power on and connected to cable outlet overnight just to entertain the possibility that some firmware or info needed to be downloaded to the modem and that for some reason it took a long time to do so.2. The next morning I tried Comcast's self activation process.3. Every time Win7's network icon in the lower right corner of my screen indicated that a internet connection was established (vs. exclamation mark) I immediately opened a IE windows and started the activation process with my account and phone #. The modem still lost connection when I did this but I kept on trying.4. It took me about 4 tries to SUCCEED. Each time I tried, I started back on the account and phone # page. But each time it got further and further in the activation process.Attempt #1: Account/phone # screen -> Retrieving Device Information -> Modem lost connection.Attempt #2: Account/phone # screen -> Retrieving Device Information -> List of devices detected (screen showed my MOTR SB6121 modem and a DTV box both shown as "inactive" -> Modem lost connection. (A thing to note here is that Comcast's activation system could specifically identify this modem. This meant it was in their system and their system was able to communicate with it)Attempt #3: Account/phone # screen -> Retrieving Device Information -> Listing devices detected -> Clicked "Rescan" device (modem)-> Hit "Next" to activate then got to screen where it said "Activating Device - This may take 10 minutes" -> Modem lost connectionAttempt #4: This isn't a real attempt because all I did is leave the web browser in the previous "Activating Device" screen and waited for the modem to re-establish connection again. I stepped away for a few minutes and when I came back I got a screen that stated "Device Activate" (and some other instructions that didn't matter) Hallelujah! Also note, NO phone calls had to be made to Comcast to activate this modem.At this point, this modem which was losing connection all the time before, now had a seemingly rock solid connection!!! I'm using the connection now with this modem as I type this. I've did some basic testing, streamed video, surf the net,etc. NO LOSS OF CONNECTION! I did a speed test and I'm getting 25Mbps down and 3.8Mbps up.Based on my experience so far, it is in my opinion that this modem works and is as good as what the majority of the reviewers here have stated. The problem lies in Comcast's self activation process which is suspicious. What doesn't make sense to me is the fact that modem can hold a solid connection if you didn't attempt to activate and after it's successfully activated. It was only when I tried to go through the self activate process that I saw problems. I can't say much about whether step #1 helped but it can't hurt to try. I mentioned it only to inform people of what exactly I did.I truly hope this helps people. Amazon is top notch. This modem is now doing what it's suppose to do with no issues. I'll come back and update this review in about a month to report if it still holds true. I think it will but we'll see. And lastly, thanks for the people who shared their experiences here. If it weren't for them I would have returned the modem back to Amazon and go through the hassle of finding another modem or giving in and renting one from Comcast. I'm trying to pay it forward with this review.

Superb Sound and Construction, Excellent Value

My old, stereo-only system consisted of several high-quality source components, separate tuner/preamp/amplifier, and a pair of very sweet (but rather low-efficiency) classic B&W speakers. When the preamp and amp both died after many years of service, I replaced them with the 2807, and added Polk center and surrounds for a 5.1 configuration. The 2807 makes my faithful B&W front speakers sing every bit as sweetly as my old audiophile separates did, with plenty of power to spare. Today my kids were watching Titanic with the master volume set just a wee bit high, and from two rooms away I thought the iceberg was colliding with the HOUSE. (The volume knob covers a rather impressive -80db to +18db range in 0.5dB increments). You even get TWO sets of amplified front speaker outputs, so you can bi-amp or bi-wire your main speakers if you want! And the 2807's quality is not only in the amplifier stage, but also in the DACs. CDs played through a digital input and handled by the 2807's processors are very smooth and detailed.(If I may insert one gripe re the amplifier: the speaker binding posts are not at ALL flexible. Using spade lugs or pin connectors is pretty much out of the question. Getting the posts to even cleanly accept heavy-gauge bare wire is difficult. Banana plugs work of course, but the posts aren't spaced correctly for standard DUAL-banana plugs. Arrrgghh!)Surround decoding and ambience processing is also generally excellent. For instance, using Dolby Pro Logic II with a stereo source like a CD generates a pretty nicely stable center image and subtle, unobtrusive surround enhancement; only occasionally will you hear things "breathe" or wander awkwardly into and out of the surround channel. It makes nearly all of my music CDs, and many TV shows, more enjoyable without calling undue attention to itself. Switching to Pure Direct mode (which is actually wonderfully clean, and is for highest-quality stereo-only handling of analog and two-channel sources) almost always sounds flat and less satisfying by comparison. Seven-channel stereo mode is also good for TV shows and CDs, giving room-filling sound with the surrounds driven nearly equally with the fronts. (There are a number of other soundfields, like Stadium, but I found most of them too gimmicky or show-offy to actually use. Stadium, for example, nicely isolates the play-by-play announcer's voice from a sportscast, and then gives it a HUGE echo that sounds like Lou Gehrig giving his farewell speech in Yankee Stadium. Just putting the announcer cleanly in the center speaker for the commentary, and boosting the ambience of the crowd in the surrounds to make you feel like you are at the game would have been a lot more usable and listenable.) DVDs I just play in straight Dolby Digital or DTS mode, both of which are handled superbly.In addition to great sound, the other major strength of the 2807 is: inputs, inputs, and more inputs. DVD *and* Videodisc. TV *and* Satellite. Two VCR (or DVR) A/V record loops. A front panel input for your camcorder or game. Plus the usual audio in/outs: Phono, CD, Tape (and of course the internal tuner). All video sources have S-video jacks. You also get up to three component video and two HDMI ins, with upconversion, and plenty of digital audio in/outs, ALL assignable as needed. Plus, any of the inputs can be renamed on the display if needed! Don't have a laserdisc player? Use the "VDP" input for something else, and change its name accordingly. I connected my digital cable TV converter to the "DBS" input, and renamed the input "CABLE". Very slick.The front panel of the 2807 is beautifully elegant and simple. Just power/standby, input select and volume knobs, and not much else, with all the other minutia tucked behind a (nice solid metal) flip-down panel. Sadly, the same can't be said of the learning, multi-brand remote. Some things on the remote are nicely done; the little button that chooses which component it will control (and nicely lights up the selection so you can see it) is placed perfectly where your thumb will easily find it. Same for the master volume adjustment. Nice ergonomics there. Basic functions aren't too hard to use, but the remote has enough buttons for an entire shirt factory, and after a few months, I am still trying to fathom the logic of why some things are grouped as they are, how to make it control my laserdisc player (which it theoretically should) etc. etc. And some things that SHOULD be on the remote, namely, dimming the front panel display, aren't. Plus, it doesn't have very good range. The remote that came with my cable box will easily work the 2807's volume etc. from a seat catty-corner across the room; the 2807's own remote needs to be closer and more on-angle. Most of the complaints you will hear in reviews about ease of use of the 2807 are really the fault of the remote. If after buying the 2807 you have enough left in your piggy bank for a really good programmable universal remote, it would be well worthwhile.And while you're getting a better remote, pick up a good third-party FM antenna. I found the sensitivity of the 2807's internal FM tuner to be less than stellar, one of its few really weak points. Even strong local stations in my area don't come in all that cleanly using the (typical) cheap wire dipole antenna that is supplied.Setup and adjustment of the 2807 is a bit tricky, but (for this computer professional) was not overly difficult. But, I did have to consult the manual frequently. For instance, I could easily find and navigate to the initial auto-setup command with the menu/right arrow/enter keys. But after getting there, it resisted all requests to actually start. Consulting the manual revealed that to actually make the auto-setup procedure GO, you have to press the LEFT arrow key at that final stage. (??!) The auto setup procedure, with supplied microphone, worked very well. It correctly identified the sizes and positions of my speakers, gave an error message when one of my surrounds had a loose wire, let me correct the issue and continue, and duly compensated for the fact that my new Polk center/surrounds are several dB more sensitive than my old B&W main speakers. Even so, I found the center speaker still WAY too prominent. Starting from the auto-setup's values, I boosted the left and right fronts slightly, and reduced the center speaker even more. Result was dialogue etc. nicely anchored in the center speaker, but it no longer sticking out like a sore thumb.If you compare the Amazon pages for the Denon 3806 and 2807, noting the percentages of which item is bought after viewing both, you can easily see that with the 2807 Denon has hit a really sweet value point, giving you a lot of bang for the buck, with plenty of power and features but without useless frills. The differences between the 2807 and 3806 (an extra 10 watts per channel, the Denon Link multi-channel digital input for Denon's high-end DVD players, three-room/three source, touchscreen remote) are not worth several hundred more dollars for 99% of ordinary consumers. I had been considering the 3806, but when the 2807 came out, my choice was immediately clear.Overall, the 2807 is a jewel. A beautiful sounding, solidly-built, top-quality component. Everyone in my family is thrilled with it. Its minor drawbacks are just that, minor. Highly recommended.PS: I will repeat the comments of others about making sure to purchase the unit from an authorized merchant (I bought mine from Crutchfield) in order to have a valid warranty from Denon.

Cross your fingers it doesn't break

My AVR 2807 stopped working properly a few months after I bought it. The HDMI up conversion just stopped working. No big deal, I thought. It has been two months now and I'm still without my receiver.I took it to one of Denon's "Super Service Centers." It sat there for over a month. By that time I was finally able to convince a customer service rep at Denon to send me a replacement unit because they could not repair my original unit. Two weeks later, they are still giving me the run around. No one answers the phone or returns messages. Bottom line, if you need to buy a Denon get it from a place where you can return it if it breaks. Denon is useless. I've never had this much trouble getting something repaired by a manufacturer. I'm disappointed the AVR 2807 stopped working after 4 months and I'm very disappointed with how Denon conducts its warranty repairs.

Great unit, but complicated-terrible support

The good: Really terrific sound.The bad: Setup a little difficult, Denon support is the worst. This is a complicated receiver and the manual is not great. Once everything is connected, the learning curve it long. If you want on screen display, you must hook up the monitor via components and not HDMI, that is a big drawback for me because I can't take advantage of the all important HDMI but I was told by Denon support I shouldn't see any difference between HDMI or component, that makes me wonder why they bothered with HDMI connections.The reviewer RonC. gave a great in depth review that I found most helpful. I have a high end Sony 60"sxrd tv that does up conversion so I don't seem to need the upconversion capability of the Denon.***NOTE:I have no problem seeing on screen display for "System Setup" but it does not work during normal viewing if it's hooked up through HDMI. On screen display is important if you want to see volume level for instance, and also for things like effects. If I based this review on Denon support, I would knock it to one star. Their support is terrible, hours on hold and when and if they come on, they are abrubt, no patience and end up putting back on hold and likely eventually disconnect. Beyond a doubt the worst support I have ever had. As much as I like this product, because of their support, and since it is complicated I need support, I am sorry I bought it.
