Good but only if you can get it at the right price

First of all, the Samsung 840 uses triple-level cell (TLC) memory vs. the multi-level cell (MLC) memory used for almost all other SSDs. So what is the difference between TLC and MLC? With TLC memory, 3 bits of information (8 possible values) are stored per cell instead of the 2 bits (4 possible values) in MLC memory. This might sound better but it also means that the cells are used more and there is less voltage fault tolerance. In the most simple terms, you can think of cells being "filled" or "emptied" by applying voltage. When 3 bits (8 possible values) of information are stored per cell, the SSD may have to apply voltage to the entire cell multiple times even though just one bit of information is encoded (depending on the bit being changed). The multiple voltage applications to each cell also slows down the write speeds and causes more wear in general.Performance-wise, the Samsung 840 is actually worse than the previous generation Samsung 830. On the Passmark benchmarks, it is slightly lower than the OCZ Agility 4 which uses asynchronous MLC NAND flash.Right now, the top three SSDs (best selling and best reviews) on Amazon are the OCZ Vertex 4, Samsung 830, and the Crucial M4. However, all three of these SSDs are cheaper and they perform better than the Samsung 840. Eventually, the TLC NAND should mean that the Samsung 840 will sell for less because less NAND is used. However, it is not worth it right now. To be safe, I would say that you should wait until the drive is at least 10-20% cheaper than the three drives above due to the uncertainty of how it will perform in the long run.One puzzling thing is that I couldn't find any mean time before failure (MTBF) estimates for the 840, while the MTBF for the 20nm MLC based 840 Pro is 1.5 million hours (lower than the 2 million hours for many 25nm MLC drives). Also, it is interesting that the drives are not 128GB, 256GB, 512GB. There are probably three reasons for this. The TLC NAND manufacturing process has lower yields so they have to "turn off" a portion of the cells to account for this. This is similar to what Nvidia does for their GPUs (16 functional streaming multiprocessors become GTX 580, 14-15 functional streaming multiprocessors become a GTX 570, etc...) Another possibility is that they anticipate that there will be more wear to the TLC NAND so that there is an unused memory bank to replace any dead cells. The third and most likely reason is a combination of the two, i.e. a portion of the turned off cells are nonfunctional due to the new manufacturing process and the remaining portion of the turned off cells are reserved for replacement.I handle tech purchase decisions for my department and so I bought one Samsung 840 to test for due diligence but won't buy more until they become much cheaper.-------------------------------------------------------12/4/12 UpdateAs predicted, these drives dropped in price quite a bit. TLC NAND is about 25% cheaper than MLC NAND so that the price of these drives should converge to a ratio of around 75% of the price of a MLC SSD in the long run.

My old macbook moves......>>>>

I have the very first Macbook (intel core duo), and kicked myself back in 2006, when the duo core 2 model was released a month later.Anyway I held on to my Macbook, and it has been used every single day since.I decided to replace the original 60G toshiba hard drive, and what a blessing.My Macbook uses SATA 1, rated for 1.5 Gb/s, this drive is SATA III, rated for 6 Gb/s. Therefore, I expected marginal performance.So here is marginal for ya:Start-up, literally 20 seconds, nearly instant shutdowns. Apps open very fast, internet web pages load a lot faster, especially with graphics and java/javascripts/flashI'm using MAC OS 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard), TRIM is enabled, but only for Apple hard drives. A nice program called "Trim Enabler" the old version (1.2), will modify a few kernel extensions to get it to work for you. You need put in your favorite search engine "Trim Enabler 32-bit Support". Be careful not to upgrade to 10.7 / 10.8 with the 32-bit software installed.Hopefully I can get 6 more years outta my Mac. :)

Best headphones barely under $50

My late headphones set the standard by which I judge all others. With a pair of titanium drivers, they had the best frequency response of any set of headphones I have ever used. There were two problems: they were open, and the cord was extremely thin and prone to breaking.Enter the ATH-M30. With a thick cord entering on only one side and nearly impervious to wear and tear, closed ears eliminating much external noise, thick and soft padding that makes long duration listening comfortable, a padded head band, (everywhere that directly touches the head is padded... some serious points there) and constructed of hard plastic and metal that bends and doesn't break. And of course sound quality and frequency response... the specs say 20Hz - 20 KHz, and while I haven't tested the high end, the low end is beautiful and strong. If you watch a movie with these and a plane flies overhead, you are not alone if you take the headphones off to make sure one didn't really fly overhead. Great signal-to-noise ratio and frequency response that makes the inadequacies of MP3s immediately apparent. If there were a similar pair of headphones that had titanium drivers, there would be a slight quality increase, but it's great as it is.Sound quality 4.5 (5 being with titanium drivers)Signal-to-noise 5Construction 5Comfort 4.5Range/Frequency response 4.5Durability 5

Neophyte audiophile mighty impressed

After purchasing an iPod mini, I thought I could use much better headphones to test the quality of the aiff files provided by iTunes. I must emphasize that I am not an expert as the other reviewers. When choosing this pair, I read reviews and looked for high quality under 50 bucks. These headphones put my big stereo speakers to shame. I can hear the background singers and instruments I haven't heard before. They sound completely awesome! (no, really, they do). There is a little bit of leak, not much. and they are extremely comfortable and lightweight on the head. I'll be testing them out extensively this weekend while traveling on airplanes. Update on airplane use: they are not noise canceling headphones, but they did block the noise of a few verbally obnoxious passengers, and while volume was cranked up, no one knew how much the tunes were cranked up. My friends that have tried them out call them *amazing*, like a symphony hall.Around the house, they block out flushing toilets, dishwashers, and those annoying sounds from the kids' room. The cord is super long, so I can keep my iPod in it's dock on the kitchen counter and walk around and cook dinner and clean. And the connector has a strain relief so I know that the cord won't break off from running around.I also needed headphones to go with my laptop while watching DVDs and listening to music and other computer things. Unlike my other cd headphones, these are in stereo and pick up amazing sounds. Also, they block out the computer sounds of the dvd spinning. I suppose they weren't made for household use, but they sound so good, that they will keep me happy for a long time, baby.

Good value in its range

Finding a pair of decent-sounding closed headphones at less than 50USD is far to be easy. The typical sound of those is boomy, with strange reverberation effects and a poor sound. The ATH-M30 provide a warm sound, with a solid bass (sometimes a bit undefined), a smooth midrange and a correct trebble. The feeling is perhaps not the "outstanding clarity" advertised but rather a relaxing sound, with a good balance between details and fun. Compared to the sennheiser HD212, the trebble is a bit lacking but, at least, the bass doesn't kill the midrange.

These headphones are well-built and will probably last. I only regret the absence of a collapsable capacity.

Please Read if Your Drive Isn't "Recognized" Anymore. An Easy Primer and Tutorial.

Many people have complained about the Toshiba 2.5" drives (of all capacities and price points) quickly 'dying' after a very short time. This opinion is prevalent on both Amazon and other shopping sites and even Toshiba's direct site itself.I was in the same boat. My Canvio Basics failed to be "recognized" by my PC within 1 month. My 2-star rating reflects this.HOWEVER, this is directed toward those who believe "all [my] valuable data is lost forever". I conjecture that 99% of the time it is not, and there is a relatively very simple & inexpensive fix.The problem is most likely not with the drive itself but rather the 'bridge' circuitry between the drive and the USB connection. There is most likely nothing wrong with the drive itself, and thus nor is there anything wrong with your data. Such was also the case with me.These drives, regardless of manufacturer or capacity, are essentially identical in their 'guts'. The difference is often nothing more than what you see: packaging, branding, bloatware, and other brand-specific identities. Indeed, crack open a lesser-known brand (Calvary, Fantom, etc.) and there's a good chance you will actually see Toshiba, Hitachi, Western Digital, or some other recognizable name's 'guts' inside.Here is how to fix the problem.1. Purchase a 2.5" SATA-to-USB enclosure. Amazon lists them for as little as $3. If you are fortunate enough to live close to a MicroCenter, they sell them for $6. Yes this is extra money and hassle, but your data is worth it, and I presume for many of you this is more convenient than dealing with returning the drive. You probably purchased this drive because it was over $6 cheaper anyway.2. The drive casing is a 2-piece shell. Use an Exacto knife or boxcutter to gently pry/'slice' open the seam between the 2 pieces. Once you get it 'started' it will be quite easy to pop apart the rest of the fasteners.3. From here it is simply a plug-and-play situation. Disengage ('unplug') the drive from the circuitry. Be gentle (use the wiggle method). Then 'plug' the drive into your new enclosure and, *Voila*.There are several Youtube videos showing this as well.Now, there are several sites/Youtube videos that claim this is not a permanent solution, due to the 'delicate balance' of the rubber bumpers in the original drive. I smell bull-manure, but only time will tell... maybe this new setup will last until the expected life of the drive, maybe it won't. Also, the $3/6 new enclosures will not support USB 3.0; you'll indeed have to shell out extra money for that. Regardless, this process will almost certainly buy you enough time to find another place for your data.All is not lost! Hope this helps.

An all-around good deal and both Mac and PC compatible...

At the time of writing this review this drive was $54.99 - a friend needed an external hard drive to back up her Mac (Time Machine Drive) and I wanted to get it with free prime shipping and as was the cheapest that had prime. At 320 GB that is more space than most people are ever going to need for backing up a notebook/MacBook. The drive is USB 3.0 and 2.0 compatible so get pretty decent transfer speeds as you would expect.If you're a Mac user you will need to bring up the disk utility (found in your utilities folder in the applications folder) and format the drive to something that the Mac can read and write to (HTFS+is the file system that is default format of OS X) but once you reformatted your good to go.And this drive is sleek looking and is really ultraportable and I'm a big fan of drives that draw their power from the USB port this means you don't have to carry around an extra wall wart (a.k.a. AC adapter). and I want to note that you could spend a little bit more if you shopped around and get a 500 GB hard drive maybe even a 640 GB for maybe around $70 I didn't really have the time to shop around so with 320 GB because I think it's good to be plenty for her needs.Thanks for reading I hope you enjoyed and/or found it informative. Toshiba Canvio 1.0 TB USB 3.0 Basics Portable Hard Drive - HDTB110XK3BA (Black)I have this drive for only one day.This review is for people who are thinking about a portable USB 3 drive.A few reviewers has posted problems with a different version of this drive.I was concerned about having trouble with my computers' USB 2 ports not able to support this drive.I found out that it has no problem with USB 2 ports on my 1 yr old desk top and 3 yr old laptop.It came with 15 inch long USB 3 cable which works fine.I was also able to use my old 3 feet USB 2 cable for my Logitech Harmony just fine with this drive. That saves me one cable as I hate to have too many cables on my desk. It does not accept standard mini-USB jack that I use for all other portable HDDs that I have because USB 3 jack is of different size/shape.Amazon product description says something about pre-loaded backup software, but I do not find any. I am not surprised as this is a basic version. I do not like to use included back up softwares anyway as SyncToy is the only backup program that I need and use.Some reviewers report loud noise. I do not notice any excessive noice levels and the noise is about per with my prior portable HDD drives from WD and Toshiba. It became warm after writing ~ 200 GB, again, about same as other drives.So far, I am happy with this HDD.-----------------------4/12/12Working fine with light use as a back up drive after about 4 mths.

Great case very much like otterbox!

I love this case, and get compliments on it all the time and have only had it a week. The inside layer is pink and hard, the outer case is silicone and is zebra. It also has a built in clear cover over the screen and the apple sign and picture spot on the back. I feel it will protect my phone in case it falls. It came with a free screen protector, but I don't think I even really needed it. I have heard that these type of cases, should be periodically taken out of the silicone to "cool" off, not that I have noticed it being hot. I'm ordering another for my daughter.
