4Simple snap on case, good price, rubber coating so less slipping
By BoaltGeek
The case is just what you might expect in terms of fit and finish (both are good to excellent). It's thin so protection from drops is limited (still better than nothing or even a Zagg type plastic adhesive) but protection from scratches is excellent. From Facebook and the comments here (Rearth responded to my questions quickly), you should know that the SF is different from the LF:SF = Soft feeling = rubberized coating, same as the well reviewed and similarly described SF Matte Black Samsung Galaxy S3 Rearth Ringke Soft Feeling Casevs.LF = Light feeling = plastic with texture for grip but no rubberized coating (also sold on Amazon here).I've hard other rubber coated cases (like this SF model), which I prefer for grip and the matte look (which I think matches the iPhone 5 case rear section, which is non-glossy, though not necessarily "matte," aluminum). However, I understand some people prefer the easier to remove from your pocket non-rubber coated models like the LF (I do hate when my pocket get turned out as a rubber edge catches the fabric of the pocket, though you learn to accommodate that quickly). Also, the rubber coating on some cases I've owned has rubbed off at the corners, hopefully this case rubber coating will be a bit more durable, but for 10 bucks it's hard to go wrong. There is a very slight "lip" so you can put the phone down with the screen side on a table but the lip keeps the glass *just* off the surface. With a adhesive screen protector it might be exactly on the same level as the lip; it's very thin which I prefer. The InCase snap on case for the iPhone 4 has too high a lip for me, but this lip is just right for limited protection while maintaining the form of the phone. This plus a decent adhesive cover over the glass front is exactly the size and degree of protection I want. It keeps he phone about the same size (it's surprisingly small/thin/light) while giving decent protection to the corners and back side of the phone. My co-worker didn't even think there was a case on it because it was still thinner than his "naked" iPhone 4S. While I hope competition drives the prices down, the quality of the case is excellent even at the current price. If I had to choose a replacement, I'd buy the same case again without regret.[Update upon receipt:]The SF soft feeling matte black is excellent: not very grippy at all but enough to keep it from sliding around on my car's dashboard or on my desk. I was able to scrape off the white text on the back without removing the rubber coating so I suspect it will be quite resistant to rubbing off at the corners of the case. The fit is excellent but not perfect (I suspect it will get pretty dang close to perfect after warming up a few times in my pocket, the plastic is hard but somewhat malleable with heat I expect). The feeling is a bit less grip than a similar snap on InCase case; honestly in my subjective opinion it's just right. Enough to stay in place even when the surfaces are not flat but not so much that it pulls the pocket out of my pants when I take the phone out. Less grip than the rubber surrounds on the Apple Bumper protectors, but with more protection over the back of the case.** The case comes with a slicker on the portion facing the back side of the phone; I was not certain that this should be removed but I found the fit to be better without the sticker and I don't think it provides any additional protection. I'd try your case with the sticker first and if you need a little more room to get the edges to "snap" into place, remove the sticker. If your case is too loose, the sticker may improve the fit. However, my case was just right without the sticker and I suspect others will be manufactured to the same specs so forego the sticker.

5Extremely Thin, Precise Case - Almost like no case at all!
By Nathan M Dornquast
What good is a thin phone if you stick it in a huge, bulky case on it?If you have the new Black iPhone 5, like I do, then you will want to protect the finish of your product. Aluminum is light; but also fairly soft. Black anodized aluminum can scuff, scratch and wear to reveal the silvery aluminum finish below. I was looking for a good solid case to protect the anodized finish and yet be as thin as possible to preserve the "thin" profile of my new phone.I am extremely happy with this case. It was hard to tell from the photo; but the case is very thin. It's plastic surface is firm, yet has something of a soft feel to it. Not hard like brittle plastic, nor soft like vinyl. I very much like the matte look and warm feel. I suspect this case, though thin, will still offer decent drop protection. Some reviewers are unhappy there is no covering on top or bottom. I prefer this. It should be noted that while there is not a full cover; there is a slight lip the protrudes at the back (approx. 1mm) that does offer some surface protection; yet stays out of the way of connectors and does not obfuscate the power button or impede speakers. There is also the slightest protuberance of the case to the front.. perhaps a 0.5mm (I took the inside sticker/label off of case to get it this much - which may indicate just how slight a lip we're talking about). I very much like cases that do this. I can set phone on it's face, without scuffing the glass. If I were to use a face protector; the face protector would be about flush with case. For me, the case is near perfect. If I could change anything; I would change two things. 1. The case name is printed on the back.. I'd prefer it was not. 2. The opening for camera and flash is bigger than it needs to be and close inspection will show a millimeter strip of the aluminum case (in addition to glass panel). A slightly smaller hole would only show the glass. At $10 this is a decent value. I know they spend much less to mass produce a case like this; but sure beats spending $40 for case at Apple Store.

5Thoughts on the Case
By Jam Spacifico
I think it's a great case. Some people write paragraphs, but that's a little overkill, so here's an easy at-a-glance review:+ Does the job+ As described+ Good quality materials+ Thin, light, barely gives any mass to the iPhone 5+ Feels good+ Very sight edge raise which should protect the anodized steel section of the front screen on tables, surfaces, etc. That's good- Won't protect the phone in the sense of you dropping it - it's NOT meant for that. It's mean to simply deter scratches. For that, it's perfect. If it starts peeling, scuffing, falling apart in the next few days, I'll add to the review. But this is a 5/5 star product. I would buy it again. And I'm the pickest, most anal perfectionist on this entire site. I demand excellence.

4Tivo Series 3 works for me
By Donald J. Christie
There are two model numbers for this AV Receiver as disclosed on CNET. One model number is the RX-V565BL, the other is the HTR-6250BL, which I purchased. At various times, the prices of the two vary on Amazon, so I just went with the cheaper one. I coupled the receiver with the Energy Take Classic 5.1 and was able to get two satellites on Ebay to complete a 7.1 speaker system. To round out the system I have the Mitsubishi DLP 73". I also have the PS3, xbox360 and Wii hooked up.Unlike another reviewer who had a problem with his Tivo Series 3 with RX-V565 version of the receiver, I had no problem at all. If you have a problem with the HDMI, just use the Tivo component out and digital optical out direct into the Yamaha. It works perfectly. The biggest problem I had in hook up was my inability to connect the Wii directly through the Yamaha. I use the component video cable for the Wii. This Wii cable has two rca connectors for audio. There are two composite inputs on the Yamaha. One has a coaxial audio and the other has digital optical audio. There is no connection for composite video plus two rca female audio inputs. I ended up connecting the Wii output video straight to the tv, without the benefit of the 1080p upscaling of the Yamaha, and the audio only to the receiver. Because of this I can only give the receiver 4 stars. The sound from the system is very clear. I am still playing with all of its sound options and will update the review after I have more experience with the sound options.UPDATE I found this inexpensive work around for the Wii audio hookup on Amazon: RCA DT2AD 2-Way Signal Converter DT2AD. It allows conversion of the analog audio to digital audio.

4Exceptional Good Value
By Gary
Sorry, Jaffe. I just don't agree with your assessment and can't help but think that there must be other issues associated with your setup. I did not find this to be a mediocre device at all.I was in the market for a current HDMI compatible A/V receiver. Like another reviewer before me, I too had an older Sony that ran hot and was built before the transition to true high definition audio and video.I am not an audiophile by any stretch of the imagination and am generally happy and satisfied with very good, high quality stereo systems. I have the DirecTV HD Package, a Sony 46 inch 60Hz LCD 1080p television and a set of JBL Northridge 5.1 surround-sound speakers that my son got me a few years ago for father's day - bless you, Nick. It's not a state of the art system, but it both looks and sounds great. I just needed a new receiver.I looked at several "best sellers" here at Amazon.com and read through the specifications and reviews carefully. I had always liked the way Yamaha's Natural Sound amplifiers sounded and decided that now was the time to finally select one for my home system. So far, I am not at all disappointed with my selection.I was particularly impressed with the simple, sleek design and the ease of setup. If you too select this system, don't pass on their microphone assisted sound field setup, which even alerted me to an inadvertent out of phase wiring error I had made. I found that it's self-setup; based upon the layout and acoustic profile of my living room, produced an exceptional balance of high-, mid-, and low-frequencies with ample volume from the rears. All in all, I am thrilled with this addition to my home theater and as I mentioned, I thought it was a very good value for the affordable price.

2If you have a Tivo HD Series 3, PASS on this Yamaha!
By Kevin Abato
Totally excited to find a Yamaha with 4 HDMI inputs on it, but I am now returning it.I have a Tivo Series 3 HD that I am trying to use, and this receiver has a bug when changing TV channels on the tivo. The Dolby Digital signal drops from the tivo, and the receiver tries to re-autodetect it every time you change channel. The end result is a digital "Chirp" that plays over the speakers and is REALLY annoying.I have tried swapping the unit out for a new one, changing wires, changing wall plugs to eliminate ground issues, tried with my other Tivo that i own, etc. Its is a known issue on tivo community forums (search for digital cough) that plagued a lot of older models of Yamahas. Aparently this new model has the same issue.i called Yamaha, and they claim to have never heard of the issue. They suggested the unit was faulty and I exchange it. Replacement model did the same thing.I am now looking for a new brand and a new receiver. Very sad indeed. :(

5Fast, quiet, solid
By Howard
My use for these drives is to replace a couple of aging five year old 80GB drives in Windows XP and XP Media Center machines. Those drives are still running fine, however, for the price, I had absolutely no reason not to upgrade them at this time.I came across this drive middle of last week and Amazon was selling it new for $29 - I was scratching my head thinking "what's the deal" and "what's wrong with these drives"? Sure, even though they were above $25, Amazon was still charging for the shipping - so I took two to bring the per drive shipping down slightly. The old 3Gb version of this drive was selling for over $40 - so again, scratching my head about this. Maybe it was a pricing mistake? Whatever - it was a great price. The drives arrived yesterday, same standard OEM packaging all of my six other WD drives have come in over the past 9 months. I used Clonezilla to clone the old drives on to the new, it went smoothly without any issues. I'm storing the old drives just in case these new ones have any issues I won't have to rebuild the system drives from scratch.I know that the motherboards in my machines cannot make use of the 6Gb throughput, however, these drives are definitely faster than what they're replacing - older WD drives which indicate they are 7200RPM and 3Gb. Specs on the older drives indicate performance shouldn't be all that different, but it is, and for the better. I won't question it.The drive indicates you can jumper pins 5 and 6 to limit it to 3Gb, but I didn't understand the benefit of doing it, so I left it unjumpered and it's working well.To summarize - these drives are fast, quiet, and so far are performing excellently. I'm very happy with them thus far.

4WD Blue 1T Drive - So far so good.
By Fred Wampler
I purchased the Western Digital 1 Tb Sata 6.0 Gb-s 32 MB Cache 3.5-Inch Internal Bare-oem Drive WD10EALX from Midwest Memory Outlet through Amazon. The drive was received within 3 or 4 days and was packaged extremely well. My original Seagate drive from my HP m9550F failed and was replace by the WD. The Seagate was the drive that HP kept shipping after a drive bios error was long known about. Information from the internet showed that lots of people lost valuable data because HP just kept shipping a drive with a known problem. Anyhow, I did get a bios update for the Seagate before it failed but it ended up failing anyhow. The WD10EALX drive is fairly loud. I still have the drive located outside the case so that may contribute to the sound level. The noise seems to be from the head movement. The platter spin is silent. For the price this is one drive that is hard to beat and I am well pleased with it. My bios can't take advantage of the 6 Gb/s transfer rate but the drive is plenty fast just the same. I have loaded around 600 gig of data onto it. After around 3 weeks I'll assume it will not fail and put the case back together. If it fails I'll update this review. I noticed on NewEgg that a few failures were being reported. Not the long-term ones but the more likely out of the box ones. Here's keeping my fingers crossed. (Boot drive failures are a pain).UPDATE:OK. I put the case back together. The drive is not silent but it is pretty quiet. I can hear just faint clicks as it does its thing. Very nice. No problems with the drive at all. Recommended.

3If your drive is not recognized...
By DH
I purchased several of these drives to use as spares for servers that had the previous generation SATA II 3.0 Gb/sec WD3200AAKS drive. Well as luck would have it, I've had some failures of those old ones and went to replace them, only this drive was not recognized by the computer. After a day of digging, turns out there is a buggy Intel SATA II controller out there in many makes and models of computers that does not properly interact with this particular drive, causing the drive to remain at the 6.0 Gb/sec interface speed and the controller at 3.0 Gb/sec; i.e. no communication possible. The fix is to place a jumper across pins 5 and 6 which will force the drive to SATA II speeds and make it show up. Unfortunately it doesn't come with any jumpers, so hopefully you have an old computer lying around you can steal one out of.The same article on WD's site that gave me the fix also said it was possible to perform this fix using a software program they offer called WDSpeed but they refused to give me a copy for some reason and said I had to go buy some jumpers.

5Not a bad receiver for an excellent price
By MarcStinebaugh
I bought this receiver because it had 100w RMS per channel, and it was really inexpensive. I was also looking for one with HDMI capability. I stream 1080p movies through it with perfect quality on my LED TV. I use a Technical Pro 5.1 surround speaker set with a powered 15" sub, and it sounds great, you can control each speaker independently, control bass, treble and surround effects. For someone that doesn't need the best thing out there, but wants something decent, I recommend it. You can't beat the price! The ONLY thing you want to watch out for is this: Turn on the TV and the device you are using (PS3/Laptop/etc.), then once those are started up, turn on the receiver, this way it doesn't get confused.

Pros: works great, looks great, very nice price.Cons: I just wish once they'd write an owner's manual designed for the Average Joe, instead of for a Technophile. We all don't work for the Geek Squad.Overall, an excellent purchase.

5Simply amazing
By MyKeyReviews
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R3Q0RHPTVPGCJZ When it comes to capturing gameplay from your consoles, you want as good quality as you can get so you can show your friends or the world those amazing moments in detail. The problem is there are so many different game captures to choose from these days such as Roxio, AverMedia, Hauppauge +more, that it can be a daunting task to choose the right one.Whilst I can't comment on the others being bad or good due to the fact I haven't personally tried them myself, I can safely say that 'Elgato Game Capture HD' offers simple connectivity, ease of use and very high quality. So what's in the box?:Game Capture Device | AV Cable(PS3) | Unencrypted HDMI Cable(Xbox or use as pass-through) | Component Cable | Mini USB - USB cable.Minimum system requirements:* Mac: Mac OS X 10.7, 2.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo CPU.* PC: Windows 7, 2.0 GHz dual core CPU.* Sound card | 4 GB RAM | Built-in USB 2.0 port | You will also need an internet connection to download the software from Elgato's official website as there is no software disk included.- - -Setting everything up was extremely simple:Step 1) Download the game captures software.Step 2) Connect your console to the 'Game Capture HD' using the appropriate cable:- PS3: You need to use the AV cable rather than HDMI cable, this is because the PS3's HDMI port is encrypted (You can still get 1080i quality).- Xbox: Use the HDMI cable provided.Step 3) Link the 'Game Capture HD' and HDTV together via HDMI cable.Step 4) Insert the USB cable included to both your computer and 'Game Capture HD'.Step 5) Load up the software.Step 6) Turn on your console.- IMPORTANT PS3 Information: PS3 users will need to go to their PS3 "Settings" - "Display Settings" - "Video Output Settings" - "Components / D-Terminal" - When selecting resolution, make sure "1080p" is NOT selected, only go up to "1080i".The PS3 auto-detects when an HDMI cable is used, but it doesn't auto-detects the AV input. The way I got around this was hooking the PS3 up directly to the TV(whilst AV cables were also connected to the game capture), I then went to the display settings and clicked on "Component / D-Terminal", once selected I had quickly removed the HDMI from the PS3 and connected it to the 'Game Capture HD', this solved the problem and took only 30 seconds for me to do.Step 7) If there is no picture displayed on the game capture software, go to the 'Game Capture HD Settings' which can be located within the "Device" box under the "Capture" tab. The setting button is to the right-hand side and looks like a hammer and spanner crossed over. It is important to have the "Input Device" on the right settings, after selecting the right option, you should have your gaming consoles screen displayed on the software. *Note*; the software has a few seconds delay on game footage, so use your TV to play games.Step 8) Tweak other settings if necessary, then your done!Set-up took barely 5 minutes overall, I was very pleased with how easy it was to set-up. :)- - -The computer specs I used whilst using the 'Game Capture HD' software were:* Windows 7 64-bit Operating System | Intel i7 960 3.2 GHz Processor | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580 Graphics Card | 12GB RAM.First of all, the installation process was error free(always a good start), the program loads up promptly and so far I have yet to see it crash. The layout is basic in a good way and is very easy to navigate, you have simple settings to choose from such as where you would like the gameplay recordings to be saved, the quality of the video files(which will impact the file size) and adjustments in the picture output. As for recording gameplay, couldn't be any simpler, just press the big red button to start the recording process and press it again to stop.To the right of the record button you have a "time-shift" bar, this is probably the best feature I have ever seen. Lets say you decided to stop recording because the game your playing is not going in your favour, then out of the blue you do the most epic thing you have every done in gaming history, which of course could not be re-created even with the highest bit of luck... well don't despair, the software keeps an ongoing backup for a certain period of time, which by using the "time-shift", you can go back in time to record that epic moment. There is also an edit tab available, however it is very basic. Tools available are 'trim' & 'delete', it basically lets you keep the good parts and throw the bad out. For those wanting that extra editing experience, I would suggest something like Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 11 (other software's available). The final part of the edit section is a quick share where you can click on lets say "YouTube", then all you have to do is type in your account details and it uploads the video for you.- - -Overall I think this is a completely solid package, and whilst it may seem a tad expensive, I do feel you get your monies worth and would highly recommend!- - -♦ UPDATE: 29th December 2012 ♦Since the review had initially been published, there have been several significant updates for the software:1) Now supports 1080p.2) Live Commentary: This is my most favourite update for the software, it lets you capture your voice by using a microphone that's connected to your computer, results are fantastic and I use it all the time.To use, you have to enable the microphone icon and then select the microphone from the "Audio In", there is also an option which when checked, reduces the game volume as when your talking through the microphone which delivers a fantastic balance between game & microphone audio. When you decide to stop recording using this feature, as you would before, give it 5-10 seconds after you have finished your gaming before you click to stop recording, this will ensure nothing is cut off.3) Stream live gameplay onto websites such as Twitch.4) You can now record from your standard definition retro gaming consoles.5) Now confirmed it works with Nintendo Wii U via HDMI!- ♦ - Current software available is 'Version 1.2'. - ♦ -

5Elgato almost gets it perfect! If you want to record gameplay get this...
By Charles Bittner
Hello gamers if you're reading this review you most likely want to capture game content and upload your footage to YouTube well I hope you find this review useful. I'm going to be comparing the Elgato Game Capture HD to the Hauppauge HD PVR and the Elgato Eye TV. And my goal is to give you direction as to which one you should buy based on my experience as a regular uploader of gaming footage to YouTube. The straight dope: IF YOU JUST WANT TO RECORD GAMEPLAY BUY THIS OVER A PVR IT IS THE PERFECT DEVICE.This short and sweet review of this device is: Buy this over the Happauge HD-PVR or Eye TV I feel it's just a superior unit for capturing gameplay no extra pieces of equipment are required like with the other products that I mentioned. It's compact and just simply passes your signal directly to your TV and allows you to capture all your gameplay and just jump back simply if you need to grab a clip. I feel that Elgato has been paying attention the gaming community on YouTube and is bought out one of the better products for us to use. The price at the time of this review is $190 about on par with HD PVR's you might be considering and this works seamlessly with Mac and PC as the software is provided for both so to me it's a no-brainer.Another very cool feature is that it does HDMI recording on the Xbox on the PS3 you need to use a special cable they provide. But I'll discuss that more below. My only complaint (and it's not really a complaint) is that it doesn't capture 1080p and only 1080i. Not a big deal because I think it's 720p is perfect and when you get into 1080p video files they get ridiculously huge and add to render times. Just an FYI 1080i is 30 frames per second and is interlaced whereas 1080p would be a full 60 frames per second. But then again the files would be ridiculously huge and I feel 720p is great for YouTube.***UPDATE - 1***The super benefit of this unit is it is bus powered (9aka draws it's power from the usb port) so no wall ac adapter (wall wart) needed! I feel if you want to go places and get gameplay (i.e. a gaming convention/a companies offices/a friends house) all you need is the Game Capture and a laptop. This thing is waaaaay better than an HD-PVRThe meaty review - The Elgato Game Capture HD vs HD-PVRs - FIGHT! So most likely your gamer and you have awesome gameplay that you want to put out there on the YouTubes or you've been doing it for a while and maybe your HD PVR finally took a fatal head shot and you might want to get something new. I feel that this device is much better than HD PVR and here is why. When you're dealing with HD PVR's if you're unfamiliar you have to use YpbPr composite cables (it's 5 cables that are like RCA cables that used to connect your console to your HD PVR) now these composite cables require that you purchase the correct one for your PlayStation or Xbox they cost around $10-$20. And the bundle of cables is a huge mess to deal with and kind of a general PITA. But just to get an idea the general layout is like this.Console (connects to) HD-PVR (connects to both) your TV and your computer - and or having to deal with composite cables when connecting your console to your PVR and then from the PVR to the TV. It is generally a major pain in the butt. And if you were thinking about getting the EyeTV from Elgato it requires that you purchase a $70-$90 signal splitter to use that as a capture device for the Mac.On a side note I believe that HD PVR's can be used to record television and such (not a feature I ever used but if you're interested in using them for that as the only scenario where they have an edge over the Elgato Game Capture)So now on to the game capture and why I think this device is awesome. 1st off you can run HDMI directly from your Xbox into the game capture and then out your TV just plain awesome one cable very simple. Now for the PS3 since Sony are such sticklers for copy protection you need to use a special cable that thankfully Elgato provides. But again its only one cable and not a bundle of 5 cables that you have to deal with when you're using composite cabling. but the beauty of this device plain and simple is that it runs on both Mac and PC and its small and easy to take with you. It really is an amazing thing and beat HD PVR's hands down. Now the software: Elgato software is amazing I personally use an Happauge HD-PVR for my Mac and use their Eye software so that I can use my Hauppage with my Mac because it only ships with software for Windows (and the Windows software for the Happauge sucks big time). But the software that comes with the game capture is awesome the cool thing is it allows you to not have to constantly be recording your gameplay but if you get a clip that you want to savor game is use the jump that feature and recorded when you're ready. And another awesome feature is that like their EyeTV software you can export and encode in many different formats. I have always and think I will always love the way Elgato gives its users options when it comes to transcoding to different formats. So the software apartment again another win for the game capture HDThe way I look at it if you want to capture game content this is the device that buy I think the day and age of the HD PVRs being used for game capture is over. This thing is awesome! If you want to check out a cool review of the software by Tejbz search on YouTube for this video: fX5YGLyiUWcSo thank you for reading I hope you found this useful and easy to understand my recommendation is by this device plain and simple. Thank you for reading this please like if you found this review helpful.Chuck the Capper

4Opposite of HD-PVR 2
By Kaisonic
Edit: Elgato is continually updating their software (built-in Twitch.tv streaming as well as in-program commentary recording from an external microphone), so a couple things below are out of date. They fixed the bug that deletes the exported file, even when you haven't moved it from the default folder. There is also now an option to disable flashback recording, so you can turn off the record-all-the-time functionality. Everything else below still stands. I also noticed that Dolby Digital sound will not pass-through - the Elgato downmixes it to stereo for both recording and the pass-through.Original October 2012 review:As the title says, this appears to be the opposite of the HD-PVR 2 in almost every regard.- Physical ease of use - the pass-through just plain works. The HD-PVR 2 required the PC to be powered on and the software opened before anything was passed through. The Elgato, I didn't even have the drivers installed yet and the pass-through worked. Definitely a plus.- Video quality - the 1080p bitrate on the Elgato is over twice the HD-PVR 2 (30 Mbps vs 14 Mbps). It's not a big deal for just uploading clips to YouTube (since they compress 1080p to the 2-6 Mbps range anyway) but for a filmmaker like me, quality is the number one priority, so the Elgato won out on this alone.- Software - the Elgato approach is both good and bad. For filmmaking, HD-PVR 2 is preferred because you hit record, you made a file, and you stopped recording. Then you have a file. That's it. With Elgato, it starts recording as soon as you open the program and doesn't stop until (presumably) you run out of disk space. This is a plus for gameplay footage - there's no need to record all the time and then go back later with a different program to cut up your footage, all this is built-in. You scroll back to before that big play happened, hit record, then edit it and export it. In-program cutting with no re-encode is definitely a plus.HOWEVER file management definitely needs work. As soon as you hit record, the ENTIRE FILE that it has been recording is saved. So if you open the program for 10 minutes, scroll back 5 minutes and hit record, it shows the latter 5 minutes in the program, but the entire 10 minute file is actually saved. And there's no way to get that first 5 minutes back unless you go get the raw TS file and cut it with a different program. You could have the program open for 45 minutes, hit record on only the last 2 minutes, and you'd have a 2-minute file in the software but a 45-minute file on disk.So to save disk space, I would cut the clip I want and do the "MP4 Original" export, which cuts and remuxes the video into an MP4 format (which jives with Media Player Classic and Premiere Pro CS5 with no problems - awesome). And then, after exporting the clip, I delete the original file, and the software DELETES THE EXPORTED FILE TOO. Unless you move the exported MP4 from the default folder, the program deletes it when you delete the source clip, which to me, doesn't make any sense and is why I only gave 3/5 stars. I lost ALL of my first-day test footage because of this bug. (and none of the files were recoverable because I kept playing after exporting and deleting, and recording the new file overwrote all the old ones). The "Input Device" selection is also very strange to me. As far as I can tell, it has a huge impact on picture quality. Even with an Xbox 360 plugged in, the "Other" option looks much better than the "Xbox 360" option (deeper blacks, better contrast, etc). So I leave it on "Other". However, when the software is not open, it appears that the option defaults to "Xbox 360" (even when a non-Xbox device is plugged in) so the picture looks worse when the software is closed than when it is open (and thus, recording). I removed the Elgato from the equation and plugged my device directly into the TV, and it looked as good as it did with the "Other" option checked and the software running. So the Elgato is doing some sort of processing on the signal, meaning the pass-through is not a bit-for-bit pass-through of the source material, which is a bit unsettling. But hopefully that's just a bug that can be fixed.Overall, the hardware is amazing, but the software needs a lot of work. It's definitely geared towards the less-technical user (the quality slider is just "good" to "best" and only recently did they add an indicator of what "good" or "best" means in terms of Mbps), so I'd like to see some more advanced options available, and maybe more explanation on what "Input Device" really does (and an option to turn off whatever processing it's doing). But the bottom line is, it records 1080p at 30 Mbps, which is a better bitrate than even my professional video camera. So this device beats out the HD-PVR 2 (which is 14 Mbps) on that alone.P.S. I tested setting my Xbox 360 to 1080p output using the component cables, and the Elgato read it and recorded from it just fine (albeit not as good quality as HDMI), but I'm assuming that means you PS3 users can record at 1080p.

4Almost!
By goodmaj
Incredibly highly functional receiver for a great price. I originally was looking at the VSX-30 but then after I learned you can play iPod to Zone 2 I went with this one. A couple of words of caution, which is why this receiver gets four instead of five stars:- I upgraded my existing receiver because I needed more HDMI inputs and wanted to have a second zone, i.e., I wanted to install patio speakers. I also bought Apple TV and really wanted to stream via Apple TV to my patio speakers. The manual says the VSX-31 allows for iPod output to Zone 2 and so I incorrectly thought this meant I could take a digital source, i.e., an HDMI input, to Zone 2. Wrong. This receiver does not output digital signals (except for iPod and Internet Radio) to Zone 2. The manual isn't quite clear on this. In the receiver's defense, using the supplied cable for the iPod/iPhone works fine and is an upgrade over the VSX-30. I have not tried Pandora thru my iPhone yet.- Activating the receiver for Zone 2 is not nearly as intuitive as it should be. The manual is not clear whatsoever, only through trial/error did I get it to work. Basically, the manual tells you to select Zone 2 in the speaker setup menu of which there are five options for speaker setup (Zone 2 is one of the options). What it DOESN'T tell you is select Zone 2 AND THEN EXIT THE SPEAKER SETUP. There isn't anything that shows you a summary of the speakers you selected so there's no way to check it.- The receiver is definitely more deep than advertised. My cabinet has a total depth of around 15.5-16". After you connect all the HDMI cables and the power cord you quickly learn that you need a little more. Make sure the depth of your cabinet is at least 17", preferably 18". We had to cut a hole in the back of ours to make it fit and be able to close the door.- I use a Harmony One Remote. When I set up the VSX-31, I plugged my Directv HDMI cable into HDMI 1. I then set my remote such that when I hit Watch TV it set the receiver to HDMI 1. However, what I kept finding was everything worked fine very briefly and then the receiver for some unknown reason would automatically switch to TV/SAT (instead of staying on HDMI 1). Hitting Help on the remote fixed that but I didn't want to hit Help every time I turned on the TV, so I assigned TV/SAT to HDMI 1.Nitpicks, perhaps. There's many, many good features of this receiver and the price ($400) was right. I wish it would have been more clear on true Zone 2 capabilities and setup.

3Good for simple things, troublesome otherwise
By Aleksandar Milivojevic
In short, works great if all you need is to hook up few A/V devices via HDMI.However, I hit limitations very fast. Two things that I simply can't get to work:1) If TV is off when receiver is turned on, there is no sound output to speakers. Why would somebody have TV off? For example, if you want to listen radio (via built-in tuner), or if you have some audio-only device connected to it (say, CD-player). Why TV must be turned on to have sound from audio-only sources output to speakers is a mystery. Once you turn on receiver, TV can be turned off, and audio will still be output to the speakers. But turning this unit on first, then TV, results in no sound. It's annoying...2) Connecting PC via DVI-HDMI cable. With this cable, there is no sound via HDMI, you need to use separate audio cable. No problems, one would think, and be wrong. You can't configure unit to use separate audio connection for something connected to HDMI port, except for HDMI-1 and then only digital audio inputs are selectable (either optical or coaxial). Fine, my sound card happens to have optical output, bought toslink cable, and connected my sound card to optical input. But it didn't really work. It works while one is in receivers GUI. But as soon as I exit the receiver's GUI, the sound is gone and receiver attempts to use HDMI port for both video and audio. Even my ancient Samsung TV allows for using HDMI for video only, and using separate input for audio. This could have been great unit. But this little things, which I hit on day one of owning this unit, are getting me very worried. To the point of thinking about returning the unit back to store and getting something else. I'll try with customer support first, though I'm rather skeptical.---- Update 2008-08-12:Called customer support line, and was impressed. This was the first time in many years that I talked to customer service rep who was comptent and jump right into solving the problems at hand. No wasting time on "nice talk", or "try powering on/off, re-connecting cables, etc".We resolved the problem with sound from PC quickly. Assigning audio port to video ports is done the other way from what I did. One needs to select audio port, and then assign HDMI port to it. Once this is done under input settings, simply exit settings, select audio input on the unit, and press audio input selection button (4 on remote) few times till it selects correct audio source (unit prefers HDMI over optical for audio). Unit will remember this selection. The second problem (no sound if TV is off when receiver is turned on), we were unable to resolve. It seems this problem may occur if HDMI control feature is enabled on the receiver. However disabling HDMI control feature (on either only receiver, or on both receiver and TV) didn't resolve the problem . Customer service rep checked with me few other settings, and suggested the unit itself may be defective :-(All in all, I give 5 stars to Pioneer's customer support. Very impressed.

5Pioneer Ellite VSX-31
By Andrew y
Amazing!!!!!!!!! I had a very high end Yamaha receiver that was about six years old that I was replacing. I had paid over $1,500.00 for the Yamaha. I was reluctant to purchase the VSX-31 as I only paid about $450.00 on it on sale. I worried how it would stack up to the much more costly but older Yamaha. I was blown away the sound! The sound was cleaner and more powerful. The directions were fantastic! I got the receiver hooked up easily. The 3-D pass through works well. The internet radio feature is awesome. Its THX certified. Great receiver for the price point! I haven't hooked up my I Pad and Control 4 system up to it yet so I can't speak how well that works. In my opinion It is much more attractive than most other receivers. You won't be sorry about this purchase.

Product Description

The SD and SDHC memory card is a highly secure stamp-sized flash memory card, which can be used in a variety of digital products: digital music players, cellular phones, handheld PCs, digital cameras, digital video camcorders, smart phones, car navigation systems and electronic books. To support the higher capacity needs, SD cards are now requiring a different design. The new SD 2.0 specifications - which supports 4GB and up - is called Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC). The SD Association has created and defined 3 speed classes to help you identify speed and performance capabilities/minimum requirements of SDHC cards and their SDHC host products. Many factors impede this performance. SDHC guarantees a minimum read and write speed necessary to handle recording high quality video and audio. The maximum card speed may vary, but you can always depend on SDHC cards to meet your SDHC host product’s high quality performance requirements.Because SDHC works differently (supports the new higher capacity cards) this new card format is not backwards compatible with legacy SD format host devices.

5Sandisk 8GB SD Memory Card Works Well
By Paul E. DuBois Jr.
This memory card from Sandisk works just as expected. The quality of the pictures loses nothing and yet the amount of photos stored is immense!Note: Be aware that not every digital camera has the capability to read memory cards above a certain ceiling (my Canon Powershot SD630 can only read memory cards up to 2gb), so make sure your camera is capable.I use this memory card for my Canon Powershot G7. With the shooting function on Manual, recording pixels at M1 (2816x2112, enough quality for an 8x10 printout), compression at Superfine, I can take a max of 1915 photos or 64'50" of video at 1024 High Resolution. At around $50, this is a good price, although I'm sure in 10 years we'll have 1tb memory cards for the same inexpensive price and this comment will be scoffed at for being sooo from the '00's.I'd recommend this product to anyone who will be traveling for an extensive time and won't have the chance to dock to a computer and upload their pictures.

3Great Class 2 card, but make sure you have an SDHC reader.
By LargeHeadedMagoo
Please note that this is a Class 2 card (Class 6 is the current "top of the line"). Class 2 transfers two mega-thingies per second rather than the six mega-thingies per second for Class 6 cards. This transfer rate is fine for most devices, but takes 3 times as long to copy files back and forth from your computer. Please also note that older card readers are not able to handle SDHC (HC stands for "High Capacity"). Some card readers are good for only 1 GB, some go up to 2 GB or 4 GB, but only the latest generations are capable of 8 GB.Lastly, if you are using Windows XP, you may need to either add Service Pack 3 or add a patch before the high capacity card can be recognized by your system.I recommend adding the patch rather than SP3. Some things haven't been working quite right since I installed the latest service pack from Microsoft - you may not wish to take that chance...

5Amazing device...totally worth the money!
By Tomas R. Chavez
I purchased this memory card for my girlfriend for Christmas, since the biggest memory card she had was 64 MB (I know, it's a damn shame...). We popped it into her Canon Powershot SD 750 and it worked flawlessly. Lots of room for high-res pictures, video, and anything else you want to put on it. I fully recommend this product to anyone who uses alot of space on their memory cards quickly: it will be well worth the money. Be forewarned, however: this memory card only works in HC-compatible devices, so older digital cameras may not pick it up. You might want to check with the company that developed your camera first to see if it will work.
