5Slick form factor, less glare, and a stunning display!
By FreeSpirit
This is my first iMac so I can't compare it to the previous versions except the ones I saw at the Apple store when comparing the overall dimensions and thickness of this latest 2012 iMac.PACKAGING - Includes 21.5" iMac, Charging cable, Wireless keyboard, and Magic Mouse. Like most Apple's products, the packaging is thoughtfully done. All tape pieces are easily removed with the individual tabs attached to them. After set up it has a clean look on my desk, there is no clutter due to the fact that the keyboard and mouse connect wirelessly. Opening the box to setting it up took maybe 5 minutes tops.FORM FACTOR - This iMac is super thin from the sides and light enough for one-handed portability if required. Looking at it from the front, it seemed only marginally different from its predecessor but the difference was very noticeable from the side. The back is slightly curved at the center and I am guessing all the components are packed in this bulge at the center back. The front glass seems to sit more flush with the body compared to the earlier version which had a tiny little gap. Has a super sleek look to it overall.SCREEN - Perhaps the most pleasing aspect of this iMac is its screen. Given the amount of real estate you get combined with the stunning LED-backlit display, it's a pleasure using the screen with its vibrant colors and low glare. Apple claims this model has 75 percent less glare than previous versions - there's no way for me to measure this but suffice it to say that even with the screen turned off, the screen is not really reflective. Once it's turned on, the reflections die down even further. Images are crisp and pictures we have taken with our DSLR camera seem further enhanced given the resolution of the screen.PORTS and CONNECTIONS - Apple did away with the optical drive in this version, which means that to read/burn CDs or DVDs, we can either connect an external drive like Apple's Superdrive to the USB port, or feed off another PC/Mac (this has to be on the same network) that has a built-in optical drive. If you are considering getting an external drive, I personally would recommend the Samsung SE-208AB/TSBS External DVD-Writer - Black which performs the same function and is $40 cheaper than Apple's super drive. For the initial set up, I was able to wirelessly transfer all files from my old PC to the iMac using the "Migration Assistant" utility on the iMac - it took a minute to start the process and all files transferred themselves in about 6 hours over the Wi-Fi network. Didn't have the need for an external drive, though that would have been a faster process. On the back, there is a SDXC memory card slot, couple of Thunderbolt ports, headphone jack, USB ports, and an ethernet port. It's good they are at the back since they avoid cable clutter from the desk, but connecting wires into them takes that small effort of getting up and plugging in the cable at the back. Not a major issue for me, the only port I will need to use is the USB port for my printer which doesn't support wireless connection.HARDWARE - Tech specs are all specified above in the product details of the listing. That said, with a 1TB hard drive, 2.7Hz quad-core i5 processor, 8GB of DDR3 memory (split into two 4GB slots), this Mac basically has more than enough in terms of processing and storage capacity for my needs. Graphic designers and users that require super memory or processing prowess, they can perhaps judge for themselves if this will suffice.ACCESSORIES - The iMac comes with a wireless keyboard and a magic mouse. The keyboard is a standard Apple keyboard, but I have found it to be slightly small for me personally. Takes some getting used to. Instead of using the Magic Mouse, I had considered getting Apple's Magic Trackpad because that is very similar to the MBPro trackpad that I have used extensively. However, having used the mouse for a few days now, I am sticking with it - just a personal preference. The Magic Mouse also lets you scroll down lengthy web pages without having to move to the side to grab the scroll bar. Just a swipe of the finger on the mouse moves the page down or up. It can also be configured to register right clicks. Somewhat similar in terms of functionality to the magic trackpad.BOTTOMLINE - There are two versions of the 21.5" iMac, one with a 2.7Hz i5 processor and the other with a 2.9Hz i5 at an additional $200. I went with the 2.7Hz which is good enough for me personally. Given the sleek form factor, absolutely gorgeous display, pretty good quality built-in speakers, front facing camera, and more than sufficient technical specs for the ordinary user like me, this is a great buy. If portability is not an issue, this in my opinion is definitely the device of choice over the MB Pro.

5I love it! I love it! I love it!
By M. Akridge
I am ecstatic about my new purchase of the iMac. What a fabulous computer. For the first time in 20 years I have walked away from Microsoft windows and it's continual crashing. So here's what I think about this wonderful machine:Pros:Unbelievably clear high definition screen, which is super thin. Clarity is awesome!Fast processer 2.9 Ghz and 8 gig RamTakes up very little room on the desk.Looks very sleek and modern (as my husband stated "The future is here")Sound is really wonderful. Who knew that built in speakers could sound that good?Magic Mouse is superb. You slide your fingers in any direction and it slides your screens across. Think IpadKeyboard is nice, but it could be better.Awesome, and I mean awesome customer service! I spent an hour on the phone with an apple rep and he very patiently showed me the differences and similarities to windows. So very helpful. It's so worth buying the $169 apple care with is a warrantee for three years with unlimited tech support. I never usually go for warrantees but this time, it's totally worth it. He even saved me over $100 by showing me I did not need Adobe Acrobat Pro, as their Adobe Apple Product does exactly what I needed the Pro for. This guy really deserves flowers and chocolates.Lessons at the apple store several times a week. I have not attended one, but intend to.There are 4 USB ports and 2 other ports for firewire, I believe.Well priced portable CD/DVD drive under $80 with a USB connector. Also sleek and high tech. It's all you need for loading the occasional software, although apple makes it easy to download everything you need from online.I was worried about transferring all my precious folders within folders from windows, but once I knew how (thank you customer support guy) it was easy and quick to get my files across.ICloud syncs all your contacts across from your iphone and ipad.Cons:Keyboard is a bit small and different, so I still have to look down to find things like '?' and '@'. It's just a little different and takes getting used to. For instance, I haven't found a backspace button, but the Delete button seems to have the same functionality used in combination with the arrow left and right button.Getting used to the Mac OS as it is different, and in all fairness, for long time apple users, this would not be a con.All in all, I now understand what Windows 8 was all about, and it's a far cry from the Mac OS. If this is your first Mac, then they do have some great beginner videos in the online help as well as the wonderful customer service rep. Would I recommend this? Yes! Yes! Yes! I'm trying to find the $$$ to replace my home PC now.

5Best iMac yet! For gamers too
By Sherif A.
I had a Macbook from 2007, the Black one, and loved it, no problems at all with it. Then I decided I wanted to get a new one, since I couldn't play some games on it anymore, such as World of Warcraft and CounterStrike.I got the Macbook Pro 2011 earlier this year. I had it for only a week, and made trips in and out of the Apple store four times because it kept freezing, specifically after playing games. It was weird and an ongoing issues with their i5 quad-core processors in the '11 models. Something with the unit overheating so easily. So I returned it and got an iPad 3rd Gen (which is obsolete 15 days after I got it... anyways) I decided I would wait for the next models. When I heard about the new iMac with the thin outer edge and improved speakers and improved everything. I decided I'd wait for it. After painfully waiting for a whole month after Apple released the "coming soon in November" webpage, on November 30th I actually purchased the base model ($1299) directly from the Apple Retail Store on the day of the launch.I can tell you, this is the best Mac I've ever had. It runs even smoother than my old macbook, which worked great for me as it was, and the newer software works excellent with my iPad and iPhone. Transferring Mac to Mac was pretty direct in how to do it.It runs WoW excellently, before custom configuring, ran at 99 FPS on the recommended graphic settings. But I put a max FPS setting to not overuse the CPU. It runs so smoothly, and the huge HD screen looks better with the higher color saturation. And going from my 13.3" to the 21.5", there so much room!!! The speakers have great Bass, and are very clear, and LOUD. The bluetooth keyboard and magic mouse worried me, specifically on having to possibly replace the batteries frequently. But I could not have been more wrong, It's been almost a month and my mouse is at 96% and keyboard is still at 100% percent. And I've used this computer everyday since purchase, and I type a lot. Like emails and papers.Let's be clear about one thing, despite me saving money for this a month and a half ahead of time, it still hurt my wallet. But you know what, Apple makes quality products, they last a long time! No viruses! Rarely any issues! Easy to use and user intuitive. I learned how to use computers starting with Macintosh. My Old Macbook from 2007, is still running, and has Mountain Lion, and now my sister is using it.Pros:Lovely Big ScreenAuto-Adjust Brightness SensorLOUD Excellent Speakers12lbs!!!Built in HD Facetime CameraEnergy EfficientCons:Magic Mouse and Keyboard sometimes take a long time to connect, like almost a minute. (That's long to me)Bit of a dust collectorOccasional graphical tearing when loading an app such as a game or movie. Only for a few seconds, but it's not pleasing to look at.All in all..Still happy! almost a month from getting it! :)Thanks for reading this, and I hope my review helped!

5Very Nice Home Theater Receiver!
By Peter A. Oliphant
After doing some research, I decided on the Denon 1908 because it had most of the state-of-the-art features of higher priced receivers, and I wanted to stay in the ball park of $1000 for both receiver and speakers. For the speakers I bought Harman Kardon HKTS-18 5.1 Channel Speaker System (which are amazing for their price!).Setting up the receiver does take some effort. I fell into a few traps, and had a friend who is knowledgeable in home theaters come over and help me. Here are some things to watch out for:(*) While it does have an HDMI out, it does not up-convert other inputs to HDMI. Simply put, the only signals which can be output through the HDMI out are those which are INPUT through HDMI connections on the receiver. It will not, for instance, take a component signal and output through HDMI. Thus, you must hook up all of the TYPES of connections from receiver to TV that you have INPUT types for. If you have HDMI inputs, you need to hook up the HDMI output to the HDTV. In addition, if you have component inputs, you must hook up the component output from receiver to HDTV. BOTH, of course, can be hooked up at the same time. Note that this also requires changing the TV input separately if going form component to HDMI inputs (a small hassle, and those with intelligent remotes can set this up to be transparent to them).(*) The set-up screen will NOT output over the HDMI line! So, even if you are going to purely use HDMI connections throughout your system, you still need to hook up the component or S-Video out to HDTV to do set-up.(*) Auto and Manual Setup must BOTH be done to get best results. The auto-setup is used to have the receiver determine best output levels for all speakers via a 6-point process of setting up a microphone (supplied!) at various location. BE sure to have a tripod during this operation (the microphone has a tripod connector on the bottom). The Manual Setup is used for other stuff. For example, one must set the speaker 'size' here (small or large, the difference being large speakers do BOTH bass and treble, small speakers dedicated to treble, as in most 5.1 speaker packages). But, most important, it is in the Manual setup you must TURN ON any self-powered bass speaker. This is also where the system can be setup to have all bass output dedicated to the bass speaker (leaving the other speakers to do what THEY do best!). Moral is, do BOTH the auto and manual setups.(*) There are two remotes supplied. The MAIN remote has a 'hidden' feature. That is, if you turn it over, there is a door you can open up to another set of remote buttons, and these are the ones used for setup. At first one can think one was sent the wrong remote when looking at illustrations in the setup manual, but it turns out these are just the buttons 'hidden' on the BACK of the remote. All in all, once you get it setup, this receiver is awesome! If I had a complaint it would be that the main remote could have more input selection buttons on the front (it has six, but one can hook up many more than six external components). Also, the names on these buttons do not reflect some of my components (e.g., I have a PS-3 hooked up via HDMI, but there is no 'game' input button on the remote). But one can assign any input to any button, so this is a VERY minor complaint. The sound is great, and I'm VERY pleased with this receiver! :)

4High quality, warm sound
By A. Lasu
After 3 months I can say the Denon receiver 1908 is a great product. Matched well with my Athena speakers. The sound is warm and pleasant compared to the Yamaha receiver its replacing. You can listen for hours and not tire. Setup was easy for me. First I used the automatic setup with the provided audyssey mic. This discovers the distance & sizes of your speakers and sets up the sounds. Next I fine tuned the sound via the manual setup. My only gripe is that the remote is front and back. I've hooked up my laptop via optical and external soundcard as "CD" so every time I need to listen to music I have to turn over the remote, open the back and select "CD". Not a big deal but seems like a hassle. I've seen a few complaints against the manual. Personally, it was very easy to follow. Its logically designed - manual or auto setup? If auto, insert mic, place in 6 different listening positions...If manual, 'setup one item at a time as you go step by step' in logical sequence. The English is easy to follow. Its similar stuff to that in my Yamaha receiver. Not that complicated, really.UPDATE NOVEMBER, 2008: Now for the bad part - the receiver 'broke' after 3 months of use. The problem - within 5min of use, it automatically turns off and puts itself in protection mode. Took it to a Denon repair shop, they changed some parts, brought it home and nope, it ain't fixed. Took it to another Denon repair shop a week ago, awaiting their response. Given how great quality of the sound is, I'm standing by my Denon! You can never go wrong with this. I love the remote, it has a heavy quality feel to it. Biggest surprise: The 1907 was selling for over $500 last year. I got the 1908 for a little over $300 brand new on Amazon!UPDATE, DECEMBER 3, 2008 - authorized repair shop fixed the problem under warranty = free. Did the auto setup then manual to fine-tune. Now that I've gone through it for the 2nd time, I can understand how less tech-savvy folks would be intimidated. The good news is that after the auto setup, you're pretty much done. You don't have to mess around with the manual setup, if you don't want to.

4Good receiver, but faulty at arrival
By S. Ambore
I was excited to hook this up with my 5.1 system and worked patiently with Denon customer service. After all the trials, it turned out the receiver was faulty and Denon guys asked me to return it. I'm going to buy the same receiver (since I have heard raving reviews about this particular one) and try if that will work out. Keeping fingers crossed!

5Felt the need to shed a little light on a few things.
By R. Goan
First, off, I've only had this headset for a day. I can't really go into detail about sound quality, how good the surround sound is, etc. However, I feel like I need to clarify a couple of things. There are two major issues that people have been complaining about with this headset: the "flimsy plastic" joints holding the ear cups on, and the lack of a graphic equalizer. Please disregard anyone who mentions either of these two "problems," because it is completely false. If you look closely at the ear cup joints, yes, there is plastic there. However, if you pay attention, the plastic isn't actually the part that's moving. It's merely a covering for the actual joint. On the back of the box, under "Durability," it clearly states that the joints are made from an aircraft grade aluminum alloy. This is a very well made product guys, I get no sense that, if treated properly (take your game rage out on something that costs a bit less, children) it will ever break on me.Now, I'm not quite sure why people are saying there's no graphic equalizer, and that they are limited to bass and treble adjustments. Directly below the bass/treble bars, there's a big button that looks like a graphic equalizer. If you click it, guess what happens. Yep, a 10 band EQ pops right up, complete with preamp volume adjustment. If you have this turned on, it grays out and overrides the bass/treble adjustments. Now that I've cleared that up, I'll give my one day impressions on the product.Super comfortable. I have a fairly large head, and yes, the headset does squeeze a little tighter than what you might be used to, but that's because the headband is made of metal and not cheap plastic. It's the squeeze of quality, learn to love it. It's not a bad thing at all, you just might not be used to it. After a few days of breaking it in, I doubt I'll even notice. The sound quality seems fantastic so far. I'm still working on getting it to sound just right with my game of choice, TF2. With movies, music, tv shows, etc, it's just amazing. Crystal clear, rich, amazing sound.I initially had problems with the mic, people in Team Fortress 2 were telling me that it was cutting out, and screwing up sound for everyone (if you've ever played the game, you know what I'm talking about). This was fixed by turning the mic gain way way down. I've been so used to mics that are super quiet, so I had windows set to max out and boost mic input, and maxed out mic input through the game as well. Turned the levels down quite a bit and presto, clear as a bell. One thing I don't like, the mic level resets itself every time I unplug the headset (rather, the usb dongle) then plug it back up. It remembers every other setting, just not mic gain. I've solved this by setting one of the G keys to reduce mic gain, so if I ever launch a game and accidentally leave it set too high, I can easily fix it on the fly.Speaking of the G keys, I was kind of disappointed that they work with ventrilo, but not teamspeak. No big deal though. Still, I was hoping to be able to sit on my porch and chill in our TS channel and be able to chat with people. (I have to go outside to smoke here...ahem >.>...you know what I mean.)The wireless range and battery life really seem to be just as good as advertised, which was a very nice surprise. I can go anywhere in my house and still have completely clear audio. The majority of my front porch gets signal as well, and that's going between three walls. Last night I went in game with only a partial charge, the software said 7 hours of battery life left. I played a little over two hours, left game, and it said I still had five hours left. Good stuff.I love this headset. Completely. After years of frustration over broken wires ruining headsets, I could not be happier with this product. If you've got a nice, functioning headset already, like a g35 or whatever, I couldn't justify telling you to purchase this. However, if you've got a cheap POS, or if you're in the market to buy a new headset because you rolled over your current pair's wires one too many times with your chair, I couldn't recommend this enough. I've never spent this much money on one before, I've always been in the 50-70 dollar range. Dropping 160 wasn't easy for me to do, money is tight these days. I don't regret the purchase at all.

5OK, but G-Keys limited, and Ventrilo PTT Now (11/11) Works
By Twoboxer
11/26/11 Update: Ventrilo PTT key now works very nicely. You can set up a standard keyboard key to PTT from the keyboard, and a G-Key to PTT from the headset when you are AFK. I have used the headset for more than 1 year now, a minimum of 3x3hr sessions per week on Ventrilo and a few hours a week on Skype. The headset has performed perfectly. Upgraded the rating to 5-stars which applies if you are purchasing these to game and use Ventrilo.7/5/12 Update: I've used this headset now for nearly two years, same usage pattern, and it still feels and functions as new. Normally I'd have concerns about the life of built-in rechargeable batteries, but this headset just plain continues to work. Even if/when the battery ultimately fails, it can still be used as a corded headset. This is a good one :)[original review follows, edited to show PTT now works.]First off, the G930 is physically a nice headset. Adjustable, comfortable, not too heavy compared to other full-sized, circumaural headphones. I'll leave full judgement on the quality of sound to others, since these older ears are no longer qualified to critique. But I *can* say you get clear, soft or loud sound from them :)Ventrilo 3.0.5 Push to Talk (PTT)=================================The only reason I'm writing a "Day 1" review (which is normally not worth much lol) is to note a key advertised feature that does not work. The reason I bought these headphones vs several others was the three G-Keys, and their ability to send commands to my PC while I am physically away from the keyboard. Specifically, the advertisement that Ventrilo "Push to Talk" was supported. It is not. [as of 3rd quarter 2011, this feature works very well].The G-Keys work with a drop-down, limited LIST of applications, ie., Windows Media Player, iTunes, Winamp, PowerDVD, WinDVD, and the G930 software itself. Ventrilo 3.0.5 (app & version number) is also listed, and a listed action for this app is "Push to Talk". I checked all those things before I bought, but after an otherwise pleasant hour with Logitech support in the Philippines, the function does not work, it is a known issue, and "they will get back to me when there's further information". [It's meaningful to note that Logitech support *did* get back to me several months later to notify me that the PTT feature now worked.]Logitech G-Keys - What is Expected from a Brandmark===================================================The other thing you should know is this: When Logitech mentions "G-Keys", that word invokes the functionality of EVERY other Logitech product that has "G-Keys". PC gamers know the term. G-Keys can be programmed to send any key, key combination, or string with one key-press as if it were typed, very quickly, via the keyboard. The "G"930's G-Keys do NOT work that way. Each of the few listed apps has only a short list of pre-determined command choices. This important difference is obscured, no doubt intentionally, in Logitech's limited literature.Other Observations==================Range: 40' seems a fair estimate of range vs the advertised range of other products. So I get a little more range than bluetooth, and arguably half what I get from, say, Sennheiser RF Headphones (100' "open air" advertised). At the edge of signal loss, the headset becomes slightly directional, ie, you can at times re-acquire or lose the signal. This is pretty much standard in my experience.Environment: My G930 needs to operate in a "radio-noisy" and highly metallic environment (lots of gear, transmitters, metal in/on exterior walls), and it performs as well as any RF devices I have used here.Ergonomics: Pretty good, with some "buts". All the keys placed on one ear piece is a good decision, but crowding can lead to indvertant button presses when picking up and donning the headset. Choosing the left ear piece was a good choice, but left-handed mousers will have some adjustments. OTOH, the G-Keys don't have much - er, any - practical gaming function, so this isn't an issue. The "Power On" key implementation is unusual, and very poorly defined. The best I can tell, to turn the device off, hold the button in for 3 seconds (not 5), and if it changes to blinking green when you release it, you have successfully shut it off. If it doesn't, hold the key a little longer next time lol.I'll be back with updates when I have used the device long enough to know it. Yes, I'm keeping it, yes I like Logitech products, and I'm hopeful eventually the G-Keys will eventually be real G-Keys. (As of 11/11 they are not.)10/20/10 Update:================I originally posted these two as workarounds for PTT. While they are no longer required, they may still prove useful:1) Very Cumbersome: When going AFK, switch Ventrilo to "open microphone", and rotate the headset microphone up to mute, down to talk.2) Highly workable: G930 software supports "plug-ins". Fortunately, a User has created one that works not only with Ventrilo (I tested it), but should work with other voicechats. The sole drawback is you push the Gkey once to "talk", and once to "stop talking". The download, description, and cause of this drawback is in this Logitech forum thread (Page 2 at this writing).

3Anti-glare, anti-fingerprint screen protector is just ok
By shelliecat
When I received these screen protectors, I set about following the application instructions to the letter. Unfortunately, there was an extra step listed in the directions that had me puzzled - this is in reference to the anti-glare and anti-fingerprint screen protectors. There were directions to remove the first tab, place the protector on the screen, and then to remove a second tab. But there is only one tab. Anyway, I did get the protector on my phone, but the edges of the protector were a bit too big to fit my screen well-there was a little bit of overhang. But I contacted the seller, and they were so responsive about addressing my concerns. I now have the HD clear screen protectors, and I like them very much. Also, watching the videos on the Tech Armor website was helpful, as was reading the FAQs. I now know how to get those isolated particles out from under the screen protector when you are applying it - no matter how careful you are, there always is some piece of lint or dust that mars the look of the screen. To fix this, you gently lift the protector off of the screen near where the dirt is, and use a piece of scotch tape to get the dirt to stick to that so you can then replace the protector. I had to do this, and it really does work! My phone is now protected from screen scratches, and the screen is responsive even when in my Otterbox case that has a built in screen protector. (Sometimes I like to put a pretty case on my phone, so I needed the second protector). I recommend the Tech Armor products, but I really like the HD Clear protector the best.

5Why spend more?
By Careful Critic
With the 50mm f1.8 lens available for less than a hundred dollars, why spend so much more to get the f1.4? The answer is, you may not need to. It all depends on your seriousness, budget, and how long you need your lens to last.If you want a "starter lens" for shooting at 50mm (or with prime lenses in general), the f1.8 would be a great buy. 50mm is a very useful and intuitive focal length to spend some time with, because it will portray the world through the viewfinder at about the same distance as your naked eye on all of Canon's consumer-priced dSLRs with the 1.6x crop factor*. (*Updated after extensive discussion in the comments.) So you could buy the f1.8 cheaply, regard it as a "play with it" lens, and get a nice introduction to "prime lens quality." The f1.8 will seem like a substantial step up from kit lenses and most consumer-priced zooms, and amazing bang for few bucks. So if the f1.8 is such a great bargain, why would the f1.4 be among Canon's most all-time popular lenses? It's that the f1.8 can take the great shot within certain conditions, but the f1.4 delivers within a much wider range of conditions. In other words, "You get what you pay for," and we'll save the best for last.Affordable-but-Solid Contruction: The f1.4 will likely have a much longer life than the cheaper plastic build of the f1.8, and retain more resale value. It's an investment, rather than a commodity. And it'll be more certain on your camera and in your hand. (My first one finally needed some calibration, after 80,000 shots and extreme wear-and-tear from frequent swapping with my other primes.) Users sometimes report the front glass falling out of their f1.8s. For the f1.4, the main issues revolve around the Micro USM focus motor, which is not as sturdy as true USM.Focus Versatility: The f1.4 lets your camera autofocus, and then lets you tweak further by hand without flipping a switch - that's called "Full-Time Manual Focus." The f1.8 requires switching back and forth between auto and manual focus. The f1.8 is famously noisy/buzzy during autofocus, has a bare-minimum focus ring, and no distance scale. The f1.4 will autofocus more reliably, especially in dim light, though it will fail occasionally when starved.Resistance to Abberation: Chromatic abberation (fringe colors) and barrel distortion are evident-but-low for both lenses at wide apertures - that's "prime lens quality." But in comparison tests, the f1.8 is more susceptible to vignetting (shadows around the corners), halation (glowing around the highlights), and lens flare. For instance, lens flare within the f1.4 tends to be more tightly controlled - "in focus" - whereas a bright light source is more like to blow out the whole shot in the f1.8. All these factors improve when stopped down, but lag about a stop behind the f1.4.Color: However, if the f1.8 catches up at f/8 to the f1.4 by many standards, it rarely catches up to the f1.4's saturation. The f1.4 has "proper-to-strong" color richness at all but the widest apertures, while the f1.8's shots are much more likely to require postwork. (I do, however, get better saturation from my 24mm f2.8 and 100mm Macro f2.8. The 50 f1.4's saturation seems good-not-great by comparison.)"Headroom": The engineering of both lenses lets you choose the tradeoff between "most possible light" or "most possible clarity." It's by design that you can choose "more light for less crisp," or stop down for sharpness. *Samples vary*, but the average 50mm f1.4 should consistently "get down to sharp" more quickly, "sharp enough" by f/2.0, "very very sharp" by f/2.8 (often exceeding the professional 24-70mm f2.8 L when wide open), and delivering "unreal sharp" by f/4. (I saw insane "specks of mascara sharpness" at f/3.5 from my first f1.4.) Again, the f1.8 will probably lag about a stop behind that curve. My second 50mm f1.4 performed even better than my first, right out of the box, "marginally sharp" at f/1.4 and increasingly beyond reproach by f/1.8-2. (At f/1.4-1.6, it suffers only from halation and some light fall-off in darker areas.) So if extreme sharpness is necessary for you, shop with a strategy that will let you return your lens or get it calibrated if not up to your needs. My guess is that my first one was more typical out of the box, but it approached the performance of the second after calibration.(It's also worth noting that the premium-priced 50mm f1.2L is drastically more sharp (and better performing generally) at wide apertures, but *less* sharp at f/2.8 through f/8. The f1.4 is a better "walkaround" performer than the f1.2L lens that costs four times as much.)Regarding light return specifically, my own experience in lens-swapping baffled me, until I read other reports that the f1.4 exposes a third of a stop brighter than most other Canon lenses. It's brighter in the viewfinder generally, and really IS a whole stop "faster" than the f1.8 at maximum apertures (i.e., the same net exposure at half the shutter speed). If you're willing to sacrifice some clarity, that extra stop can make a huge difference when you're challenged by moving targets in low light.(For instance, shooting "wide open" for performers in dim venues. Faster shutter for less motion blur. More light for better color. And the edges may be soft at 100% magnification, but *relatively* clear compared to the out-of-focus background. That "illusion of clarity" isn't as likely to print very well, but resizes very snappily for the web.)So the f1.8 can certainly produce some stunning images, particularly in general daylight photography OR tightly-controlled conditions OR stopped down, but is less adaptable to challenging circumstances that the f1.4."The Best for Last...":Now, with both these lenses, you get the advantage of marvelously wide aperture, which can be used for a tight focal plane that lets the background (or foreground distractions) fall quickly out of focus. This is of course a cornerstone of creative photography, and both lenses give you plenty to explore. (In practice, even f/2.8 delivers a pretty shallow depth of field in close-up shots, so these wider lenses give you even more room to play.)However, there is such a thing as "blur quality," called "bokeh," based on the number of aperture blades within the lens. The f1.8 has five, and the f1.4 has eight. The f1.8 will portray out-of-focus lights more pentagonally, the f1.4 more roundly. (In focus, those same lights will be eight-pointed stars with the f1.4, ten-pointed with the f1.8 - odd numbers of blades double the number of points.) But most importantly, the blur from the f1.8 can be rather "choppy," especially at wide apertures, while the f1.4's is consistently more "buttery smooth."In other words, there's more to quality than sharpness - there's also quality where your shot is LESS than sharp. And this is where the f1.4 becomes "a favorite lens" for some people, even at over three times the price of its diminuitive counterpart.Make no mistake, the f1.8 would make an excellent "starter" lens. But the f1.4 is an exceptionally *serious* lens. Are you still learning to love photography? Then $80 is a fine price to pay for a lens you might outgrow. Or do you already love photography? Then $300 is a worthy price for a true investment that will reliably pay off. So they're both bargains, just buy what's best for you.(Addendum - Canon also sells a 50mm f2.5 Macro lens around $250. If you NEED macro, it's reportedly pretty good, and for general purpose as well. But it's a) not even as fast as the f1.8, b) more difficult to manually focus than the f1.4, and c) not as creamy in the bokeh, with six aperture blades instead of eight. And Canon's 100mm version is drastically more practical for macro work, and better performing generally. But the 50mm Macro does become a contender, at a "middle price," if what you really need is one decent lens to do as many different things as possible, though none of them as well.)

4A review for parents
By Matthew Davidson
I bought this lens to take indoor portraits of my nine-month-old daughter using available light. I was tired of the harsh photos produced by the built-in flash on the Canon 20D or Digital Rebel. A bounce flash improves matters great deal, but I wanted to see what could be done with a fast lens. The Canon 50mm 1.4 gobbles light. It opens up a world of indoor photography that is not possible with a 4.0 lens. The 50mm focal length combined with available light produces natural-looking results. It is exactly what your eye sees. Shadows and highlights are intact. It is a revelation if you're used to the harsh drop shadows and evenly-lit faces produced by flashes. This is a jarring step up in quality from snapshot to "wow"As noted, focus is soft at /1.4 and begins to sharpen at /2.0 to /2.8. Not a bad thing, though. Some of my favorite pictures have been produced with the aperture wide open. The depth of field is so narrow at this point, that the subject's face is in focus, but the shoulders start to blur.I use this lens with a 20D. The balance is perfect, the combination feels very professional and responsive. Operation is very simple. Move the camera into aperture priority mode (Av), look though the view finder and adjust the aperture until you see the shutter speed is faster than 1/30th a second (30).I agonized over the 1.4 vs. the 1.8 versions of this lens. The additional stop does provide more shooting options. Often I'm shooting at the edge of acceptable shutter speed, and juggling both aperture and ISO. Many reviews comparing the two talk about build quality, focus motor speed/noise, etc, but the bottom line for me was the extra stop was totally worth it. If you want to shoot indoors without a flash, get the 1.4. If you simply want a nice sharp lens at this focal length, the 1.8 is for you.As a father, my only regret is I wish I had this lens earlier. From one parent to another, I'll tell you the price of the lens is irrelevant, as the pictures it produces are priceless. Now, go make a backup of your photo library.

5EXCELLENT - At a price
By S. Rose
This 50mm is amazing. I truly love it. I debated a long time between the 1.8 and the 1.4. In the end, I figured I'd never replace it again so get the 1.4. I love it - the images it makes are staggering. Still - it's pricy compared to the 1.8 - but not to L series lenses. I think it's worth it. I read online it had barrel distortion wide open - and it does if you really study the image - but that's perfectly OK with me for the 1.4 shallow depth of field. Normal people will never see that at all. One drawback you may not think of is that beautiful wide open 1.4 aperture is not available to you if there is much light. It's so fast it's easy to overexpose - even with 1/4000th of a second shutter. It takes awesome portraits - awesome landscapes. This is a must have lens in every EOS owner's bag. Don't get the 1.8 and wish you got this one. Get this one and start taking great photos.
