---Intro---The worst thing about getting this amazing phone is the lack of protective accessories available for it when it first came out. You literally had to baby your phone from scratches, bump, and drops for 2+ weeks until the cases and screen protectors SLOOOOOOOOWLY became available. I almost think it's some kind of conspiracy where the phone companies tell accessories manufacturers to wait on releasing accessories so consumers can damage their phones during that brief period so the phone companies can milk more money from returns, repairs, and replacements.... Anyways, I bought this phone on October 24th and just today received the case. Let me assure you - IT IS WORTH THE WAIT.I'm not going to go on about Otterbox, but they are a top tier company who releases very well manufactured and IMO, awesome phone cases. The last case I had with them was for the HTC HD7, and I put that case through some serious abuse for over a year without any serious problems.So if you are familiar with the Defender Series from Otterbox, you'd know the case is very durable. Each case in the current Defender Series actually consists of four parts: a polycarbonate frame with built in screen protector which goes on top of your phone. This frame connects to an inner polycarbonate layer which sandwiches your phone from the back. THEN the whole thing is wrapped around by a silicone outer layer. Then you have the option to connect this beast to a swivel belt-clip holster. These three layers of protection provides excellent resistance against drops, scratches, bumps, and shocks; however, NOT water resistant.---Directions to assemble the case---The case comes fully assembled, and the directions on how to disassemble and reassemble on your phone can be slightly confusing.1. First take the outer most layer off, the belt holster/clip.2. Then stick your fingernail or something thin ( but not sharp) like it and pry off the silicone outer layer. Don't worry about ripping or damaging it. It is surprisingly flexible and durable.3. Now you have the innermost layer composed of two pieces that sandwiches your phone. One is the frame with the built in screen protector (top piece). It connects to the other polycarbonate piece in the back ( bottom piece) via three latches on each sides, two on the bottom, and one at the top. Where you see the two pieces meet at each latch, all you have to do is stick your fingernail in it and press DOWN and the latch will separate. You will see that the locking mechanism is just a little plastic nub on the top piece that snaps into place into the bottom piece when you "lock" all the latches.Your fingernails simply provide a bit of leverage and room for the nub to pop out.4. To reassemble the case with your phone in it, reverse directions. It's pretty self explanatory from here on.---Love the case!---With the case on, I was amazed at how great this phone looks. The cutouts are *highly* precise for **ALL** the peripherals; nothing is blocked or impeded. Additionally, there are very well made port covers for the microphone jack at the top and the charging plug at the bottom to minimize dust and debris from entering. The S-Pen slot opening is surrounded by what seems like a reinforced plastic/rubber frame ( camera/led slot also reinforced), and access is perfect, even for fat fingers like mine. The belt clip feels heavy duty and swivels 360 for any position you want. Additionally the clip can be pushed-locked in an inclined position for you to watch videos on a flat surface. You can also attach the phone to the belt clip holster face out or face in for further protection. The built in screen protector and silicone outer layer forms a bezel about 2-3 mm deep around the perimeter of the screen, ensuring maximum protection against damage if the phone is ever dropped face first. Overall the phone feels SOLID and has a hefty weight to it, like a tank. There are videos on drop tests with this case on YT, and while I would not intentionally replicate those tests, there is definitely the peace of mind I have that IF I do drop this phone, I won't cry.---Now, to some criticism, because this case is not perfect.---With so many layers, you're wondering, how does the power and volume rocker work? The power button works fine, requiring operating pressure pretty close to a "naked phone". The volume rocker, however, requires more pressure; you do have to press harder, so the difference is noticeable. Obviously with the case on, the phone's bulk and mass is significantly higher. The case( including belt holster) itself weighs ~8oz ( ~226 grams)+ the phone is 180g so phone + case more than doubles the weight. If your pockets were not tight/heavy before with the phone inside, it will definitely be tight(er)/heavy(er) now. The increased weight and bulk can be a negative, although this is highly subjective to different people. Another very minor concern would be there is no protection for the camera/sensors slot in the front or the camera/led slot in the back. They are surrounded by the protective shell, but the surface itself is NOT covered so if you throw your phone in your pockets with items with a hardness rating higher than the Gorilla Glass cover, your camera lens and sensor lens WILL be scratched. An example would be the common sand particulates present EVERYWHERE in the air and collects in your pockets. Some of these silicates are harder than the Gorilla Glass and contribute to many of the tiny scratches found on just about every electronic screens out there. To be fair, this minor issue is not a major fault for Otterbox, because no product from any manufacturer provides 100% total protection.NOW, the biggest negative to the case: the built in screen protector. The screen protector covers the entire screen EXCEPT for the physical home button at the bottom and the front sensors/camera. Prior to installation, I cleaned both sides of the screen protector very thoroughly and I do notice it is not as clear as some of the stand-alone screen protectors. The difference isn't that great, but if you are ocd about screen quality/clarity, you will notice it. The issue that bothers me that most is the fact the screen protector DOES NOT bind/stick/adhere to the screen perfectly. There is a noticeable gap of space between the phone's glass screen and the screen protector at certain areas ( in my case, near the bottom middle of the screen). How does it affect the capacitive touch functions? Well, for the most part, normal touch functions works well without any issues, but I do find occasionally I do have to press an app or "return" button more than once, with finger or pen. Very occasionally. The S-pen stylus works fine on the screen protector, although the tip feels a bit rougher as you write on it compared to the original glass screen screen. So far, writing feels as precise as writing on the glass surface... The last issue is the price : at ~$60 with or without shipping, it is a very expensive case. This could be cost prohibitive for people, and there are comparable cases out there at a lower price with almost ( but not equivalent!)similar specs and protective capabilities.---Final thoughts---In terms of protection, I'd give this case 10/5 (see why below)! But considering the other issues, I would give this case a solid 4.5/5. Remember the MAIN function of any Otterbox DEFENDER case is to PROTECT your phone from accidents. You will have to make some compromises with your expectations of the case in other parameters besides protection. If you wanted something nice and light and pretty, go ahead and buy one of those mall kiosk cases for $5-10. Any case is better than no case, but when I dropped my phone for the first time, OB Defender was on and the RELIEF was worth every penny. Trust me when I say that after your first major drop, the few niggles you have regarding the case will disappear real quick like! With a cheap case.... who knows if the $700 phone may or may not pop out upon impact...It would seem like I focused so much on the negatives in this review, but if I were to focus on the positives, this review would be 5x longer than it already is! This case provides almost unparallel protection in an aesthetically pleasing package. However, there are some issues, mainly with the screen protector. The bulk and weight of the phone +case does not bother me at all. I like my phones heavy and tank-like. The phone feels so BAD*SS with the case on, so robust and totally JACKED that I am confident it can handle almost any accident from normal, daily usage. However, I do believe the MSRP is a bit high for this case, as $40-50 would be a more ideal price range. But if you are a fan of any of the Defender Series from Otterbox, or just want a great case in general despite the cost, then this case is for you. I don't regret buying it : ) Awesome case for an even more awesome phone!++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++Update 1/5/13:The screen protector issue bothered me so much that I requested a replacement under warranty. I received another case recently, and the the new case's screen protector also is not perfectly flushed with the glass screen of the phone. Based on this experience, and researching multiple other reviews, I have to concur that this issue is prevalent to this version of the Defender case for the Samsung Galaxy Note 2. Some reviewers have suggested I remove the built in screen protector ( glued on), and replace it with a good stand alone. I am giving this suggestion some serious consideration... Keep in mind this may void the warranty!I have also read another review of complaints about an echo problem for this phone with the Defender case. I have the T-Mobile version ( SGH-T889) and I have not had any issues with calls or echos during calls.On a positive note, I DROPPED MY PHONE! The phone was in my hoodie pocket and the d*mn thing is so big and this particular hoodie had small pockets and it slipped out somehow. I went through the classic 5 stages of "Dropping an Expensive Phone" in a period of about 2 seconds : Denial, Anger, Depression, Acceptance, and OTTERBOX. VERY, VERY, VERY glad I had the case on!!!++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++Update 1/11/13:I have had the Defender case about 1 month now. I can't stress enough the protective capabilities this case offers to this expensive phone. I have dropped my phone two times: from about waist height one time on its corner, and another time it fell off my lap as I got out of my truck and landed on the screen! Not a single problem each time. Heck, the case barely even had a ding on it!The biggest issue with the case continues to be the screen protector. After only 2 weeks with the replacement case, the screen actually becomes very dirty and dusty because the hole where the home button is allows all types of dirt and dust to enter and ACCUMULATE in the gap between the screen protector and the glass screen. So I removed the built in screen protector!Note: You CAN just rip the screen protector right off, since it's just glued on, but you risk snapping the ( fragile) piece framing the screen protector unless you do it carefully. If this piece is damaged, the suck factor would be high since it forms the bezel around your phone's screen and is an integral component of the case( it helps form the inner polycarbonate layer). Secondly, just ripping the screen protector off leaves weird glue residue behind and I just don't like it ( I'm slightly OCD).---To remove the built in screen protector---1. Dismantle the case into its individual components and put aside all the parts except the piece containing the screen protector.2. Place the built in screen protector FACE DOWN, so the surface that you type/text/write on is facing the desk or whatever flat surface you are using to do this.3. Take a heating element and heat up the edge of the screen protector where you see it is glued on via a thin strip of adhesive around the border. I used a hair dryer set on the hottest setting and blow dried the glue until it softened in a minute or so.4. Then simply apply some gentle pressure on the screen protector and it will peel right off its polycarbonate backing. EASY!Tip: The more you heat the glue, the easier the screen protector comes off.Then simply apply a good stand alone screen protector. I used MobC Galaxy Note 2 / N7100 Screen Protector HD Film - Oil Resistant Japanese Film - Retail Packaging - Fine Oleophobic [2-Pack] and currently using MobC Galaxy Note 2 / N7100 Screen Protector HD Film - 99.9% Clarity Japanese Film - Retail Packaging - Fine Crystal [2-Pack]. The screen looks GREAT!!!!! I am now 100% happy with this Defender case, post modification. Keep in mind this modification may void your warranty, but I am happy I did it.++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++Update 2/5/13:Unless something major happens, this will be my final update for this product. I've had this phone the day it became available for T-Mobile, and the Otterbox Defender since December 14th. Let me repeat for the zillionth time: this is an AMAZING phone! I've had so many complements and inquiries on it (*%^&, that's a phone?... What IS that?... Professor: That's a big @$$ phone dude... Why is that tablet on your belt? etc etc etc; and, to this DAY I still find out a new trick or two it can do! If you are on the fence about this Defender Otterbox, then from one Note lover to another, it's almost obligatory you get this case! There are no other cases out there that can match the protective capabilities of this OB Defender. And, in my personal opinion, the phone looks great, and feels great with the case. I have dropped my phone 4 times now and even though I paid full MSRP, the case MORE than paid for itself. Eventually, my long term plan is to resell this phone (in almost like new condition thanks to the OB Defender), and use that money towards the Note 4. So even at a higher price point than the myriad of cases currently available, this case has much more value.---Some final analysis on the Defender case---Screen protector:+ With the built in screen protector removed, there are no problems thus far. When you remove the built in screen protector and examine it, you will see that its quality just...sucks: it's thick, clarity issues, and just feels and looks mediocre at best. Honestly, those cheap $0.99 ones you find at mall kiosks or online are a better quality. I know there are people on the fence about removing it, but a vast majority of people agree that removing it makes the case significantly better. Dirt and dust does not accumulate and muck up this (big, beautiful, bad-@$$) screen, requiring frequent case dismantling and cleaning... ANNOYING! And the gap between the built in screen protector and screen... ANNOYING! With a good standalone screen protector, the screen clarity, smoothness, responsiveness is MUCH better than the built in screen protector and feels almost as good as a naked screen, while not sacrificing ANY protection. A good standalone screen protector covers as much, if not more, screen area as the built in one. The difference is DEFINITELY SIGNIFICANT between the built in screen protector and a good stand alone; I don't think anyone who has removed it has ever wished they could reinstall the built in one!! There may or may not be some VERY slight flexing and creaking issue, but is anything perfect in life that doesn't require some compromise?+ For those who are considering removing the built in screen protector: it looks like the piece holding the built in screen protector will actually rest on top of any screen protector you install on your own, so it will not push up against it. YES! I know this is a major point for many people who worry about the face bezel grinding against the edges of your screen protectors.+ The case does creaks and flexes after removing the built in screen protector, but only if you squeeze it beyond the normal operating pressure. I don't notice the slight flexing and/or creaks unless I deliberately squeeze the case to force these things to happen. Based on my personal experience with my case, there are no deficits in the functionality of the case or its protective capabilities due to flexing and/or creaking. Some reviews have proposed that the screen protector contributes to the integrity of the case, which is why it creaks and flexes once removed. If the built screen protector ( adhered via a thin strip of GLUE) is an integral component to the integrity of the case, then I can't explain why my phone is 100% fine after having dropped it THREE times after removing the it...NFC/S-Beam:+ With my Defender case on but WITHOUT the belt holster, I have sent files to another Note 2 and S3 without a Defender case and it works fine. With the belt holster on, NFC/S-Beam does NOT work. The NFC antenna is on the battery cover of the phone and it looks like the extra gap added by the clip weakens the signal. I read another review stating S-Beam doesn't work if both devices have Defender cases, but I have NOT verified this, so I won't comment on it. Although I have to mention that surely Otterbox R&D would have to have had acknowledged this possibility, so I can't see why S-Beam won't function with 2 Defender cases....?Belt holster + Clip issues:+ With the belt holster/clip attached to the case and the phone screen facing OUT, you can't access the S-pen if the phone is attached to the belt holster such that the two rounded corners of the belt holster is on the right. The S-pen slot is blocked by these two corners where the phone is inserted. If the phone is attached to the belt holster and the two rounded corners are on the left, you can access the pen if you have thin fingers. The ONLY way to access the S-pen with the belt holster attached from ANY position is if the phone was placed on the holster face IN with the back facing OUT ( rear camera facing the world). Hopefully this isn't too confusing, but you'll understand once you get the case.+ You cannot run with the phone in the belt holster. The phone latches on pretty securely, but will fall off the holster when running. I ran to catch a bus, the phone fell off the holster, bounced all over. Pissed that it fell off, but happy the same time that nothing happened...+ After the screen protector debacle, I think the clip *may* be the other unreliable component of the Defender series. More specifically, it just feels like the hinge on it would break before anything else would during long term use. To be fair, the hinge works as it's supposed to and it feels relatively strong, but I just can't help but wonder how reliable it would be a year down the road.... Another issue is if you have a belt that fits the clip perfectly, then the clip works quite well, holding your phone securely to your belt as intended due to some retention notches. Otherwise, it doesn't feel secure on an ill-fitting belt. Also, the hinge isn't rigid enough such that it bites down on your pants securely if you decide to just clamp the phone on your pants and not your belt: I've had the entire phone/case/belt holster unit fall off at a brisk walk, or accidently knocked it off from sitting down or putting on my bookbag.+ Squeezing the holster clip allows it to open and be placed on your belt. If you squeeze all the way, a plastic edge catches and locks the clip open, allowing it to be used as a kickstand. 1: Phone cannot use clip as a kickstand while standing vertical, only landscape position. 2: You can rotate the clip/kickstand to either the horizontal position ( about 45 degrees viewing angle) or vertical position (a steep 80 degrees viewing angle) for different viewing angles in landscape view. 3: Squeezing the clip ALL THE WAY allows it to lock and be used as a kickstand, but sometimes you squeeze too hard while trying to put it on a belt and it also locks. This can be slightly annoying. 4: The plastic edge that locks the clip open seems really cheap and could wear down with repeated use. Between the hinge issue and this edge, I do wonder how the clip will perform a year down the road...Others:+ The Defender case will NOT fit on any charging docks out there, or almost any other types of docks. This could be a negative for those who love their accessories. Constantly dismantling and reassembling the case to use a dock probably will be annoying. If you find a dock that fits, please let me know.+ Volume rocker and/or power button noticeably harder to press. This could be good or bad for some people.+ Dust does collect where the front camera/sensors are. This area can be hard to clean; preferably use q-tips to get down in that slot.+ SIZE. If you bought this phone, then size was clearly not an issue for you. However the case makes a big and heavy phone even bigger and heavier: if you stick the phone in your pocket, you FEEL it's there. For guys, depending on your pants and the size/depth of your pockets, the phone should generally fit in your pockets even with the holster attached. Obviously, if you have skinny/tight pants and/or small pockets,then it will be much tighter or maybe won't fit. For girls, with your tight jeans, small pockets and butts/hips, it will definitely be a tight fit and case+holster won't fit for most pants. But ya'll have purses for that. Personally, I like the holster always attached to the case, even when I'm not belt clipping it. Most of the time the phone is in my laptop bag. Occasionally it's in my front pants/hoodie/jacket pockets. The phone has NEVER been in my pants' back pocket, holster attached or not; just too damn big.+ Does the thickness of the Defender OB affect signal strength of Wi-Fi, cellular reception, etc? I haven't done any real empirical tests to quantify anything, but subjectively... I can't tell. I've done a test where I had the case on versus case off. Sometimes the phone gets 2 bars of 4G with case ON, 1 bar case OFF and vice-versa. I live in the boonies and I barely get 4G so blah. I know signal attenuation is affected by a variety of factors, including the medium it must pass through. So all the layers of this case probably interfere with signals somewhat, but not significantly enough to make a huge difference. Again, no empirical tests.++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++That's all I can think of. I hope this (LONG)comprehensive review helped ya'll with your case searching endeavors. If you want to keep that big beautiful Note 2 safe, look no further. In terms of protection, you will not find a better case out there, short of shelling out over $100 for a custom made one. You will forgive the minor issues of the case when you drop the phone for the first time... or fifth :) Seriously, buy this case (and a separate screen protector to install)! You'll love it. This is the fourth Oterbox that I have purchased. The first three were great and protected my phones perfect. Well when I got my new Note 2 the first thing I wanted was an Oterbox to protect it. Finally received it the other day. At first look I was impressed and it looked to be a strong and rugged as the previous ones. Once I put it onto the phone I found that the quality was not so great. Everything fit fine but not tight like the other cases. There is a gap between the screen protector and the screen so everytime you touch the screen you are pushing the protector into the screen first. Also there is a hole cut in the screen protector for the home button, this allows dirt and moisture to get to your phone. Is not very good to protect from dirt. In all it is a good strong cover and will protect the phone but it is sure not up to past quality standards of Oterbox.
